About the lesson

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I am offering tuition for both GCSE and A-Level Biology. In addition I can also offer my services to anyone who is struggling with a biological area of GCSE Science.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

In terms of Biology I achieved grade A* at GCSE level as part of the Double Science GCSE. I then took Biology at A-Level, achieving grade B before going on to study Biology at the University of Manchester. I have now completed the first two years of my Biology degree, gaining average grades of 70 (1st class) in both years. My degree has covered a wide range of topics and while my specialist subjects are human anatomy, physiology and cell biology I am also proficient in the areas of microbiology, histology, developmental biology, genetics, pathology, biochemistry, environmental science, ecology and molecular biology. I have also taken units relating to the role of science in history and the modern world, as well as Data Handling units covering the various mathematical and technical skills required as a modern scientist. My other qualifications that relate to tutoring are A grade GCSEs in English Language and Maths and IT key skills level 3.

- How much do you charge?

I charge just £10 an hour. I see tutoring as something useful to add to my CV and a means of using my knowledge to help others rather than using it strictly as a means of earning money. I also accept that as a less qualified tutor I can't charge too much, so £10 just covers the petrol cost more than anything.

- Where do you teach?

I can do it either at my place in the Saltney area of Chester or can travel to a student's home.

- When are you available?

I am available Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings in the week from 7pm onwards and can do any time on Sunday.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach GCSE and A-Level, so normally from ages 14-18.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

While it isn't practical for me to offer online tutor sessions since I have no internet connection at home I would be quite happy to answer e-mail questions from any students between sessions.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

While I appreciate that there may be more qualified tutors, my strength as a student is that I only studied at GCSE and A-Level fairly recently so I both know what it's like and have learned an almost identical syllabus to the current one.

About David

- What kind of experience do you have?

In addition to the academic qualifications I have already mentioned I have also done a fair bit of practical work at University, including original research in anatomy. My other main areas of practical work have been microbiology and cell biology. My placement at Eden Biodesign has given me a greater appreciation of the practical role of many of the principles and theories I have learned about in my academic career and I believe I am now in a far better position to teach others about these topics.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I do not have a CRB certificate but I can provide professional references if required.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I studied for my GCSEs and A-Levels at Alsager School in South Cheshire, before moving to the University of Manchester, where I have worked with some of Europe's leading scientists in a number of biological fields.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am currently on a placement year at a pharmaceutical company in Speke called Eden Biodesign. Upon leaving Eden in August I will return to Manchester for the final year of my degree. I am still a member of the University of Manchester during this year and am free to use all their facilities at any time.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I am new to tutoring so have no current students.
