What are the Advantages of Choosing Irish?
As I said, some people regard Irish as a difficult subject. I am a native Irish speaker myself and I can say that there are certainly difficult parts, however, I think a lot of this is stigma, and that many of us are better at Irish than we think!
Some of the best poems and books I studied during my leaving certificate course were In Irish, as they offer a glimpse into the Irish way of thinking, and sometimes a glimpse into Irish history in a way that books in the English language cant. It also offers you a chance to visit some of the Irish speaking communities in Ireland and speak with the locals, and I think this is a beautiful thing. We should all be proud of our language!
It can also open many doors for you professionally, with plenty of jobs in Ireland, in the media industry, as well as in the USA and mainland Europe. We can all take advantage of Irish and its growing nature and use it to travel the world.
I mentioned the media industry, and one city that has a booming one is Dublin, the capital being a hub of film and Tv production. If you'd like help finding Irish tutors in Dublin, check out our Superprof guide at that link!
Now I know this is easier said than done, and it is a tricky subject for some, but this is where the Irish tutor comes in, covering aspects of the course the teacher might have missed in class.
Can I Easily Find an Irish Tutor in Galway?
I mentioned above the Irish speaking communities in Ireland, and in fact, Galway has arguably the most famous of them. Connemara. Irish is a region in the west of Galway where Irish is the main language, not English, though the locals speak that too.
This is a place where you grow up speaking Irish, going to school through Irish, playing sports in Irish and working in Irish. Despite a high number of Irish people not using the language on a regular basis, these areas have kept it alive and it shows no signs of waning.
Even in the city, you are more likely to overhear someone speaking Irish than in many of the other cities across the country. The language plays a very important role in education, with the national university of Galway offering many courses through Irish. They even have an Irish speaking branch of the university located further west, in Carraroe. There are also many, many businesses located in Galway that use Irish as their working language.
Galway is a busy student city with a large Irish speaking community, and this means it is the perfect place to study Irish, or find your own tutor, whatever the level.
