About Alex
I have experience working with students in schools (delivering ten-week programmes to classes of Key Stage 4 pupils), universities (undergraduate) and in a private setting (from Key Stage 4 up to Postgraduate Research). I have a full DBS Advanced Certificate, and am signed up to the DBS renewal service.
I've seen success working with students across the broad range of ages. Students I've worked with have been awarded some of the highest grades in the Scholars' Programme, a charity initiative to introduce the humanities to Key Stage 4 pupils. University students I've worked with seen marked increases in their work, being awarded first class marks at dissertation and in exams.
I'm currently working on a PhD in English Literature at the University of Nottingham, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). I'm working on the intersection of literature and politics, specifically looking at British writing from the 1970s and '80s. Before that, I was awarded the best mark of my cohort for my Masters in Contemporary Literature and Culture at Birkbeck College, University of London. My dissertation was awarded a Distinction. My own writing has been published internationally, my plays have been toured to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and I've written funding bids which have won arts funding from the Arts Council and the European Union. I have a passion for education and access, and have been involved with programmes during my study to improve access to higher-education.

First I take the time to understand the goals of the student. Depending on the context and immediacy of the need - whether we are cramming for an exam in two weeks or looking to bolster a skill for life - I will design a schedule of lessons which takes into account the student's other study requirements and target grades, and which works alongside the teaching they are receiving in school. My lesson structure is flexible to the student's lives, and lesson-length can vary according to what they have going on, as well as the urgency of the need. I have worked with and secured great results for students at a variety of levels, from GCSE right through to Masters Degree level. I don't seek to apply the same techniques to each; instead I apply a deep understanding of the specific requirements of each level of study. I factor in marking rubric for examining bodies in the United Kingdom for GCSE and A-Level, and adapt to institutional marking practice for undergraduate level. Much of teaching English at GCSE level is about unlocking the student's connection with the texts which are being studied. So often, the way in which texts are taught relies upon ephemeral and dusty fact-based learning. Instead, I try to find the thematic and narrative beats which is intuitively accessible for the student, contextualising the text within a way of thinking that makes sense for the student. At all levels, my job is so often to help students realise what they already think about the text and about literature, and to guide their thinking in a direction which gives them the confidence to express their thoughts. Included within this of course are reading and writing skills, which will be tailored and deployed according to the student's needs.
