About the lesson
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Singing (classical, jazz, soul, motown, folk and pop), Flute and Piano (classical, jazz & blues) alongside Music Theory and Composition. I additionally teach Recorders and Musicianship to younger students who are not yet ready to start learning a specific instrument.
Additionally, I can work with students who require confidence building, technique & performance skills.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I hold a BSc (Hon) Degree in Music & a BMus Degree in Music Performance.
I hold Grade 8 in Piano, Flute, Singing, Theory, Percussion & Recorders.
- How much do you charge?
I charge a fixed rate of £28.00 per hour.
For the first lesson I offer students a discount - £10.00 for half an hour to see if they like my tuition before committing to further lessons.
Students in receipt of benefits or with financial difficulties can negotiate a lower rate.
- Where do you teach?
I teach primarily at my home address in Whitstable, Canterbury. There is a bus from Canterbury Bus Station leading onto Harbour Street in Whitstable (2 minutes from my house), a mainlain station nearby (Whitstable BR) and free parking on my street and neighbouring streets.
I also teach at the Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys in Canterbury one day each week and I am the Musical Director for The Oyster Singers in Whitstable.
I am currently in negotiations to travel to Kent University on Monday and teach there as I have several students who are on the Performance Course at the University.
I am willing to travel to students but block bookings are essential, plus travel expenses.

I am available:
Monday 10am - 6pm
Tuesday 10am-7pm
Thursday 10am-7pm
Saturday 10am-5pm
Not all of these times may be available. Some are currently booked by existing students.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach very young children (3-6 years) musicianship which is a basic all round fun way to learn the elements of music and try several instruments.
I currently have 6 students aged 7-12 who are studying specific instruments and working towards Graded Examinations.
I currently have 15 students ages 12 - adult (up to pension age) who are studying advanced examinations (Grade 8 & Diploma) or performance / confidence building techniques.
If requested, I can enter students for ABRSM Classical Exams in Flute, Piano and Singing (Up to Grade 8 and Diploma Level), Jazz Piano Exams (ABRSM) and Trinity Rock School Exams for Keyboard and Vocal Studies.

About Emily
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching since the age of 17, when I started in my home town of Grimsby.
Since moving to London I have established a teaching business and now currently have 20+ students. I additionally hold group workshops in Vocal Harmony, Technique & Performance Skills and was recently appointed Musical Director of The Oyster Singers in Whitstable.
Additionally, I was a vocal teacher at The Italia Conti School in London, various Stagecoach & Theatertrains, Reach Academy in Broadstairs & Jigsaw in Canterbury.
I have also taught Woodwind, Piano & Singing at a variety of schools. I currently teach Woodwind, Singing, Composition & Music Theory part time at the Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys.

I have a full CRB Disclosure Certificate and several references.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I trained full time at City University with Steven Stanton & Dennis Smalley until 2003. Here I specialised in Etho-musicology, Music Theory, Performance, Composition & Sound Recording.
I also trained part time at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama until 2003 with Ian Kennedy, Mhauri Lawson & Sarah Pring.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a Member of the Musicians Union & Actors Equity.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I currently have 5 students aged 3-6 years old studying musicianship which is an early and fun introduction to music.
I have several students aged 7-12, some studying towards examinations whilst learning fun methods of music making.
I have several advanced and professional students who are studying advanced qualifications or learning a new style of playing / singing.
I additional teach several pensioners who sing for enjoyment.
