I will provide support to students outside of tutoring sessions, when necessary, using Email and Zoom.
I like to use a range of online resources, including screen sharing, coding puzzle sites, my own Kahoot quizzes, instructional videos, programming software and interactive revision sites, while providing my complete support throughout. These tools make my lessons fun, stimulating, engaging and challenging, which achieves much better results.
I base my teaching on developing a quick rapport with students, through being easy going, talkative, engaging, supportive, understanding, passionate about my subject(s), pleasant, polite and humorous - in my opinion anyway! I also have interests such as sport, gaming, science, comedy and movies, which can help deliver teaching objectives, build connections and start conversations.
I have years of experience at being able to pitch lessons at the right level for each individual student, ensuring that work is both challenging and achievable.
One of our best tutors! High-quality profile, qualifications verified and response guaranteed. Matthew will plan your first lesson with care.
I`m a fully qualified Computer Science & ICT Teacher with 18 years experience of working in an independent SEMH school for 11-16 year old boys. I've recently moved on to pursue new challenges and opportunities, such as this. However, during my time at the school, I was a Senior Teacher, Head of Department for Computer Science & ICT, Supervisor, Student Teacher Mentor, Head of House, ICT Coordinator, and an IT Technician, which included some Network and Systems Administration.
I have also done tutoring in various ways, such as from my home, at a tutoring company's premises, and online - both live and on-demand, in both Computer Science and Maths. As a consequence of the lock-down, I now also have experience of teaching online from home. I used Zoom to provide live one-to-one video lessons, as well as support and feedback sessions. I also provided on-demand teaching, using a Learning Management System (LMS) called Canvas, which enabled me to create, set, receive, and mark assignments, as well as make announcements, create and moderate chat rooms, and give students feedback and support when necessary, using various methods such as recorded video, live video, comments and messages.
I currently have a particular interest in teaching Computer Programming (Coding), and in this capacity, I've used software such as Python, GameMaker, Scratch, SQL, MIT App Inventor, and the BBC Micro:bit hardware. I'm pleased to be able to say that, in an attempt to inspire my students, I published a game app, called 'One Lap Reloaded', which is available on Android and iOS via the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store. I am even more pleased to say that I thought-up, designed, programmed (coded), created and published the app, completely by myself. Although I did involve my students every step of the way, as testers, idea providers, and advertisers, which hopefully inspired them even more.
I have an excellent ability to create a fairly quick rapport with students, through being easy going, talkative, engaging, supportive, understanding, passionate about my subject(s), pleasant, polite and humorous - in my opinion anyway! I also have interests such as sport, gaming, science, comedy and movies, which can help deliver teaching objectives, build connections and start conversations.
My rates can vary depending on things like subject levels, goals, travel and the individual financial circumstances of the students and their parents or carers.
I consider myself a versatile, dedicated and motivated education professional with 18 years of experience and expertise within the SEMH sector. I am a qualified teacher, interested in delivering Computer Science, Programming or ICT up to GCSE level, including online teaching and home tutoring. My goal is to impart my professional skills, knowledge and understanding, in an educational position, which will result in high quality education and significant progress for my students. I have proven to be excellent at building relationships, and I aim to collaborate harmoniously with colleagues, my students, and their parents or carers, to achieve this goal.
Teacher, Senior Teacher, Head of the Computer Science & ICT Department, ICT Coordinator, Deputy Head of House, and IT Technician - including some Network & Systems Administration, at an SEMH Secondary School – Sep 2002 to Aug 2020
In September 2002 I was given the opportunity to become a teacher at a secondary school for boys with emotional and behavioural difficulties, now known as an SEMH school. Initially, I was taken on as a PE, Maths and ICT Teacher, despite having no experience of being a teacher, apart from work experience as a PE teacher at a secondary school, and various sports coaching positions. I was given a full timetable the day after my interview, so I had to quickly learn the ICT and Maths curriculums, as well as how to teach them, through self-study and practice - and my only child was also born at this time.
It transpired that I quickly became exclusively the ICT teacher, and began to build the previously non-existent ICT department, with the help of the school leaders. There were only a small number of computers in the whole school, so I had a specialist ICT room installed and began delivering the Entry Level Certificate in ICT, Functional Skills in ICT, and GCSE ICT, achieving excellent results. I’m proud to say that some students even completed degrees and gained employment in ICT related fields, which I believe is a rare and amazing achievement for pupils who attended an SEMH school.
With the help of a newly founded specialist company called Tektoo (now T2 Computer Services), we began building up a school computer network. In addition to my full teaching timetable, teaching ICT to all Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 classes, I became the onsite IT Technician, which included some Network & Systems Administration, and cooperated with T2 when expert knowledge was required. Again, I learned these skills through self-study, practice, and training with T2. I was then officially made Head of Department, and created all the required policies and schemes of work, from then on.
I then became a middle manager & senior teacher, which involved mentoring student teachers from Edge Hill University with great success, supervising staff in my department through Performance Management Reviews, and becoming the ICT Co-ordinator. As the ICT Co-ordinator, I was responsible for such things as the obtaining and installing all the school’s hardware and software, the promotion of ICT use by all departments, and training staff in all aspects of ICT use. All these areas understandably became quite extensive in recent years
As soon as Computer Science became an option, I immediately started training to deliver, and then delivering the ELC and GCSE curriculum in this subject. I believed, though challenging, it would be more interesting, enjoyable and relevant for both the pupils and myself. I’ve had an interest in, and an aptitude for, computer programming (coding) and gaming for the last forty years, and coding is a large part of Computer Science, which I could be more passionate about, and the students would find more engaging.
Building relationships by being approachable, fair and humorous, as well as connecting with the pupils in areas they are interested in, such as sport, music, and gaming, has always been one of my strengths in terms of teaching, and managing behaviour, both inside and outside of the classroom.
I am substantially trained and experienced in using and teaching the Python Programming Language, and I’ve also taught programming using Scratch, GameMaker, MIT App Inventor and the BBC micro:bit. I am pleased to mention that, in an attempt to inspire my students, I published a game app, called 'One Lap Reloaded', on both the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store. I am even more pleased to say that I thought-up, designed, programmed (coded), created and published the app, completely by myself. Although I did involve my students every step of the way, as critics, testers, idea providers, and advertisers, which hopefully inspired them even more.

Deadly! Working with Matti has really increased my understanding of python. After a couple of sessions with Matti I can already start to see the differences it is making to my python coding.
This is through the way that Matti has detailed, fun, structured lessons. Which he always brings great energy and patience!
I would highly recommend
Tom is an excellent student and a really nice person. He is very keen to learn, and he's a pleasure to work with.

Excellent! Matthew in my sons words is 'awesome'. Thank you for your focused teaching and relaxed encouraging style - we look forward to our future lessons.
George, was pleasant, keen to learn and tried hard to answer questions throughout the lesson.
Deadly! Matthew is an amazing teacher! I'm an adult and wanted to understand things about computers I don't understand (as I find it difficult to get a structured answers on Google or Youtube) - Matthew is helping me with that. He is preparing for each lesson and they are always very informative. Thank you very much, Matthew!
Nadya is a perfect student - always interested & engaged, and really pleasant to talk to
Worked with matty for the last 18 months cant fault the guy honest and trustworthy
I’ve worked with Matti for over two years, he’s a really great tutor and very caring. He’s kind and patient- He takes a lot of pride in his work and is always willing to support both pupils and staffs. I would 100% recommend working with him
I loved learning with Matthew, he is patient, educator, with a pleasant humor. Taking lessons with Matthew is a pleasure. I recommend him without hesitation as a teacher.
Matthew is not only a great teacher, but also a great teacher trainer. He was my mentor during my time as a trainee teacher and even though that was over a decade ago, I still use the lessons and theories he passed on to me on a regular basis. His subject knowledge is excellent and his teaching style fits the subject perfectly. Dan Evans, Head of Computing at Tameside College.
Matthew is an absolute professional who prides himself on being able to successfully teach all ages and levels to a high standard. He has an excellent history of being able to teach pupils with varying abilities as well as complex behavioral, social and emotional difficulties and/or high achieving pupils. He takes such pride in all aspects of teaching and is an extremely likeable and pleasant teacher.
Mathew is a great teacher , I have been in his lessons whilst he is teaching. Great atmosphere, it really is. When I use to be a keyworker and I would bring my class into his lessons, they loved making apps and creating games from scratch, step by step instructions would be shown through the big board and all the children would engage in the activities.
Mathew is great at what he does, he’s very clued up and intellectual and has a very good teaching style that caters for everyone, would recommend!
I worked with Matthew for 4 years and in that time I came to recognise that he was not only entirely competent in his professional field but also nurturing, funny, caring, trustworthy and patient to a fault. He really cared about the pupils he taught and helped those with the lowest esteem to recognise their potential. I would recommend Matthew 100% to not only develop academic potential, but a well rounded pupil.
A very approachable person, with perfect personality with a huge passion with what he does and he’s also very good at it! He taught me in school 5 years ago! Would highly recommend ️️️️️
I’ve worked with Matthew for over a decade, during this time he has consistently delivered outstanding lessons to pupils with a wide range academic abilities, ensuring they access the breadth of the curriculum and reach their potential.
