I find the best method to teach maths is by doing, not just by listening. Reading a maths book will not get you far. Practicing exam papers would be my main focus as it exposes you to every aspect of the course. If we attempt a question where the pupil is unfamiliar or does not understand the material, I will teach them what they need to know.
I am currently studying Electronic and Computer Engineering in the University of Limerick. It makes constant use of advanced calculus, much harder than that of leaving cert maths. I gave my brother maths grinds and he learned a lot. My help gave him the knowledge for him to get a C in higher level maths for his JC. This was achieved with a bit over a month of grinds before the exams where he knew almost nothing at the start of them. With more time I believe any student can achieve at least this grade.
