~ My Background ~

I’ve taught English to all levels, including:
+ business English: 11 years
+ academic English: 11 years
+ IELTS: 7 years
+ FCE: 3 years
+ TOEFL: 3 years

I am very focused on helping my students achieve their personal, career, or academic goals.

During your first few lessons with me, we will discuss your learning goals and work together to create a study plan that you can take with you, even if you decide not to continue having lessons. This means you will be able to continue to improve your English skills on your own!

I have a CELTA certificate in teaching English, as well as a Bachelor of Computer Science. I worked in the Information Technology field for over 18 years, at many corporations such as Rothschild, Siemens, KPMG, Westinghouse and Australia Post.

Eleven years ago, I decided to change career and follow my passion which is teaching, and career/business coaching.

I have also taught juggling for the last 24 years and I love seeing the joy on someone’s face when they learn something new. It’s extremely gratifying to watch someone dedicate themselves to a task and improve their skills over time.

I am a very disciplined person and try to bring that structure into the lessons to make it easier for students to learn in a methodical way.

~ Me as a Teacher ~

During our sessions, I will work closely with you to identify what your goals are and to create a clear plan to achieve them. Because each client has their own habits and ways of doing things, every session will be tailored to your specific needs and also individual personality.

I feel that I am extremely empathetic and always try to ensure that my clients are getting the most out of their learning experience, regardless of whether they are in a classroom or one-on-one situation. I try to constantly improve myself as a teacher by using continuous improvement techniques to re-assess how each teaching session went.

Having good rapport with my students is vital - I realise that learning a language can be a very difficult process and I always try to support students by being aware of their needs and also how much/little feedback they should be receiving in each situation.

Also, I am extremely supportive and motivating - sometimes you need that extra push when studying for an exam or preparing for a business presentation!

~ I am have strong experience teaching the following ESL topics ~

+ General English: Beginner > Advanced
+ Academic exam preparation: IELTS
+ Business English: meetings, interviews, presentations, resumes, job applications, email/report writing, and general communication with work colleagues.

~ My Lessons and Teaching Style ~

I believe it is important for the student to get the most out of their lesson time. Therefore, I encourage them to do most of the speaking and try to limit myself to asking questions/facilitating conversation or providing corrections where necessary.

For correction, I try to provide feedback immediately for grammar, vocabulary of pronunciation mistakes. I think this is one of the best ways a student can learn and improve.

For any exam preparation (e.g. IELTS), I will work with you to develop a very detailed, targeted, and personalised study plan, so you can do the bulk of your study on your own. Also, I will help you with specific skills, tips, and homework exercises for each skill band, so you can improve your overall skill levels and be fully prepared for your exam.

I regularly receive feedback from students that I am extremely patient and excellent teacher.

For IELTS Students: I will provide a free introductory 30-minute lesson to all students who intend to book at least 5-hours of lessons with me. If you need to complete an IELTS test within the next 1-2 weeks, I will DEFINITELY try to help you, but I will not offer a free 30 minute lesson if I can only book in 1-2 hours of lessons.

  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

I was born in Hobart, Australia and have lived in different parts of Australia, Europe, and England. I have spoken English all my life.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

The English language is used by people in so many different countries around the world. There are many different cultures that have adopted this language and influenced its evolution over time. Therefore, it’s difficult to identify one specific person who would be represent of it.

That said, one of my favourite authors is J. K. Rowling and the Harry Potter series is an excellent example of beautiful language. I often recommend this book series to my students as it has a wide range of descriptive words, while still being relative easy to comprehend.

  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

    ‘Plough through the rough.’

This means to move forwards and turn soil, usually with a machine or tool for farming.

My mother is Hungarian and had some difficulties with the pronunciation of the English language when she first arrived in Australia. She explained to me that English wasn’t a phonetic language and used this phrase to prove her point.

Plough - British spelling of ‘plow’

Through – pronounced similar to ‘threw’
Rough - pronounced similar to ‘ruff’
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It’s imperative that I can speak this language, as I am currently living in Melbourne, where English is the main language spoken. Also, it’s important for me, because I am an English teacher :)
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

English is a relatively easy language to start learning. The grammar structure is fairly simple and uses the ‘subject + verb + object’ form. Also, speakers of Latin-based languages like French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian, have the advantage that there are a lot of similar words.

However, it does become a lot more complicated and intricate, once a student moves into the intermediate-advanced levels. Some of the grammar is very specific and can be confusing when learning it for the first time – for example: passive voice, 2nd and 3rd conditional, or relative clauses. Any grammar structure, if practiced enough, can be successfully integrated into one’s vocabulary. So, with enough dedicated practice, it is possible to master most, if not all, of these more difficult forms.

Pronunciation will always be difficult for students because English isn’t phonetic. However, it’s relatively simple to improve the way you pronounce sounds and words if you regularly practice the drilling exercises that are available.

The areas that seem to be the most difficult for students at higher levels are prepositions, phrasal verbs, and idioms. Some teachers will spend time in their lessons teaching specific examples of these, however, there are SO many to cover that I think that this is something a student can study on their own, via the internet or YouTube videos. For me, I think it is more important to teach grammar structure, study techniques and concepts, so each student has the tools to learn and grow with the language on their own.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Students don’t generally learn much grammar in school. I do remember briefly looking at adjectives when I was 13 years old, but the majority of my grammar/language knowledge came to me after I became an English teacher. An interesting fact is that English learners often have more grammar knowledge than the average native speaker!

I do remember having great difficulty understanding the present perfect simple grammar tense, while I was studying my CELTA degree. It seemed completely crazy to me that we could have a grammar tense that was almost completely interchangeable with the simple past tense in certain situations. I asked both CELTA instructors for an explanation, but neither could help me understand when to use it. Luckily, there is a lot of English grammar information in the internet and I have since watched countless grammar videos and studied this grammar tense enough to be able to teach it adequately. :)
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I wouldn’t say that travelling has helped me increase my knowledge of English that much. It has helped me understand how different cultures use the language though. Also, I have been really impressed with the high level of English skill and knowledge in most European countries. These days, it’s relatively easy to travel in Europe and speak to almost anyone in English.
