About the lesson
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach English Language, English Literature, Classical Civilisations, and English as a Foreign Language (EFL).
- Tell me about your qualifications.
English Literature BA (Hons) Cardiff University (2.1), PGCE Secondary English from Cambridge University, ACTDEC TESOL 70 hour certification, ITC 100 hour TEFL certification, currently studying for MEd Researching Practice at Cambridge University (part-time).
- How much do you charge?
I charge £20 per hour from my home in Oundle. There is £3 extra per hour for travel to the student's own home, and a 10% discount for pre-payment of a block of 10 hours (so £180). Group EFL lessons can be arranged, please call for prices as these are dependent on group size. While students may be required to purchase core texts as needed, all teaching resources, pen and paper are included.
- Where do you teach?
I teach in Oundle, near Peterborough, from my own home (smoke free). I can travel within the Peterborough area, but do charge more for this service (see above).
- When are you available?
I am available at weekends all day and evenings from 7.45pm. No seasonal vacations, so can work through school holiday periods.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
11-18 English, including SATs, GCSE and A-level. Also English as a Foreign Language at band B or above (Elementary level upwards).
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can provide online tutoring, where I will provide comments on any work sent as well as give advice and help on exam technique and be available by appointment for web chat. This is charged at £12 per month flat rate.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
My style is informal and is very much based around improving confidence, being very clear about what students need to do to achieve their personal goals, and being transparent about how their work will be marked and assessed. With children, we work alongside the teacher in school, consolidating what is being taught and trying to keep students a step ahead to improve confidence.

- What kind of experience do you have?
Four years teaching in state secondary schools including sixth form, marking for SATS and GCSE (AQA), have taught Edexcel, AQA and WBEC specifications for GCSE, and have been tutoring for two years. I recently left teaching and now work for a national assessment agency where I am a Senior Test Developer for key stage three English, so I have a unique experience of the assessment systems in the UK!
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes.
- Where and with whom did you train?

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
GTC, NUT.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I am tutoring one student who is being home schooled due to personal and health issues, another who is looking to boost GCSE performance this summer to achieve a C. I have had a lot of experience with GCSE students and SAT students, but have tutored A-level in the past.
