About the lesson
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Advanced English to members of the Japanese community in London and provide tutorials for foreign students attending degree courses. My teaching is specialized, focuses on a tutorial style and is totally pupil focused. Currently I am delivering tutorials in History, Economics, Psychology, Viniculture and Open Source Software.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Masters Degree with distinction in Public History and Popular Memory from Ruskin College. I first studied their in 1995 getting a distinction in the Ruskin Diploma and going on to Girton College where I was studying Sumerian. I also had a Churchill Travelling Fellowship that took me to Australia for a three year study of Indigenous society in the contemporary. I write poetry and won first prize in the Independent poetry competition in 1991 and have performed in plays at festivals around the world. There is a lot more I could write but in essence I am just someone who has traveled a lot and learnt at the feet of Lacota people in the Catskill Mountains as well as in the lectures of Oxford and Cambridge.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £20 for an hour. There is a discount fee of £15 for the first session.
- Where do you teach?
I teach from home which is 300 meters from Tufnell Park tube station on the Northern Line.
- When are you available?
I am available seven days a week.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all abilities over 18 years of age.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
For online tutoring I work in e-mail and with Skype. We have to start with a phone call, which can be free on Skype, and then I will lay out a schedule with my students. I am completely computer literate and run a Mac platform, a PC platform and a Linux platform.
I can certainly help with advice on setting up an Open Source system which means free software for students who have little money.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Don't come to me just because you are a student having a few issues with something you don't really care that much about. I don't teach subjects I teach an approach to life that is learned through the process of academic studies. This is the beauty of the academic course, it can give you so much more than just a piece of paper saying you have a degree, it can give you the foundation for a beautiful life. Of course we need to get first class results and I don't look for anything else and believe that every student can get there with the right support.
- Junior Cycle
- Transition Year
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught English in Madrid, run arts projects in Primary schools, provided community projects in Residential Homes for the Elderly, worked with gang groups in Birmingham, made films about youth disassociation in indigenous communities and am currently building an on line Human Rights archive. I teach because I love the process of learning and see what it can do for people and their lives.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- Where and with whom did you train?
My finest trainer was Raphael Samuel, he taught me the importance of academic rigor and the mysteries of the essay. Google him and you will find a wealth of information.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I am currently tutoring a Japanese senior executive in Advanced English and English culture, a Japanese Housewife is learning all about wine production in English, a South African student is coming to me for assistance with his degree in Media History and a Masters student in Anthropology is coming to me for her dissertation work. My other students are studying in psychology, history and some are just coming to learn.
