My teaching methodology is to ensure that the student is engaged and entertained in the lesson, drawing on my experience as a stand up comic in college, as a bored student does not retain information. I do this by trying to be as light-hearted as possible when explaining concepts, and using plenty of references to the students interests, so that the facts and concepts taught are much more memorable. I also prioritise going slow and ensuring that students fully understand a topic rather than trying to cover as many topics as possible in a lesson, as I would rather have a student fully understand a concept before they vaguely understood 5 of them.
I am a Zoology graduate who also holds an Msc in Marine Biology. Throughout my Masters programme I taught swimming and junior lifeguard classes of up to a wide variety of age groups and would use examples from marine biology to explain swimming concepts or human biology to explain first aid. I also tutored a family friend for his Leaving Certificate Biology examination and I have worked for University College Cork as a Lab Demonstrator instructing freshman biology students on how to complete their practical assignments.
