About Tamika
Hi there! I’m a passionate educator-in-training with a lifelong commitment to helping students find their voice through literacy. I am currently an undergraduate student and am thrilled to be entering Teachers College in the Fall of 2026 to formalize my career as an elementary school teacher.
My journey in education started at home; as one of eight children, I have spent years tutoring my seven siblings, ranging in age from 1 to 17. This unique experience taught me how to adapt my communication style to meet any developmental stage—whether I’m reading a picture book with a toddler or helping a teenager refine a high school essay. Currently, I serve as a Teacher’s Assistant at an elementary school, where I support students in grades 3, 4, and 6 with their literacy skills. This role has given me deep insight into the OCDSB curriculum and helped me develop a professional, yet highly approachable, teaching style.
My Philosophy
I believe that the best learning happens in an inclusive, inviting environment where a student feels safe to take risks and make mistakes. I pride myself on building strong, authentic relationships with my tutorees. While I maintain a professional standard of excellence, I make sure my lessons are engaging and tailored to each student's specific interests.
Beyond the Classroom
When I’m not teaching, I love staying active and bringing that same energy to my daily life! You can usually find me at the gym, out on a hiking trail, or practicing my singing. I am also a huge fan of storytelling in all its forms—I love getting lost in a good book, and I love a good movie even more! I find that my personal passion for stories helps me connect with my students when we are working on their own reading and writing projects.
I look forward to helping your student reach their full potential!

My Methodology & Techniques
My teaching philosophy is built on the "Scaffolding" method. Instead of starting from scratch, I identify what a student already knows and build upon that foundation. I align my techniques with the OCDSB curriculum, focusing on phonics, fluency, and deep reading comprehension. I also emphasize writing skills, helping students move from brainstorming ideas to structuring clear, cohesive sentences and paragraphs. I use a "Pre-Interview" process to assess a student's interests, allowing me to curate materials that keep them engaged and motivated.
A Typical Lesson Plan
The Warm-Up: A quick, engaging word game or a "check-in" reading to build immediate confidence.
The Core Skill: We dive into a specific goal. This could be a comprehension strategy (like making predictions) or a writing focus (like using descriptive adjectives).
Active Practice: The student applies the skill. We might analyze a short text together or collaborate on a writing prompt that aligns with their grade level.
Wrap-Up & Feedback: A summary of what was mastered and a "mini-challenge" to bridge the gap to our next session.
What Sets Me Apart
I bring the energy of a "big sibling" and the discipline of a classroom professional. Having tutored seven siblings across all age groups and currently serving as a teacher's assistant for grades 3, 4, and 6, I am uniquely skilled at managing different learning styles. I don't just teach English; I understand the mechanics of language acquisition through my work in French literacy, which allows me to explain the "how" and "why" behind reading and writing in a way that resonates with students.
Who These Lessons Are For:
These lessons are specifically designed for elementary and middle school students (Grades 1–8). I specialize in helping students who need to boost their reading proficiency or improve their essay or creative writing, or those working within the Ontario curriculum who need extra support to meet grade-level expectations.
