As a part of undergrad-lab demonstrator, I had guided 8 second-year students per practical, in the year 2019. my approach is to lead them to the answer and provoking their though-process by asking questions. To the students who did slightly better, I assigned somewhat harder question/problem, pushing them a bit further. Similarly, for the students who struggled with understanding difficult concepts, I changed my style of explanation. Later on, as a bioinformatician I worked as a part of team where I constantly switched roles between student and mentor depending on the type of interaction.
I'm a PhD student in the area of Genomic data Science. During my undergraduate studies (Biotechnology engineering, 3.16 GPA), Masters studies (genetics, 3.36 GPA) and industrial experience, I had the chance to meet some excellent mentors. I believe that with the right guidance, anyone can grow fond of a subject and gain skills. I wish to share my knowledge & experience in genetics and related areas with students.
• Profile Summary:
A PhD student (Starting August 2021) with 2-year experience in Bioinformatics and Genetics through industrial and curricular projects. I have been part of several projects involving human disease data as well as evolutionary genetics. Postgraduate Lab Demonstrator (University College Dublin) (Jan-Apr 2019 )
Guided and monitored undergraduates through lab practicals in the subjects viz., Genetics, Microbiology and Ecology. Evaluated lab journals and clarified queries from the batches of 10+ students, in co-ordination with the module coordinator during weekly sessions.
• Genetics/ bioinformatics experience:
1. Intern at Empiric Logic Ltd. (Junior Bioinformatician) (Sep 2020- Jan 2021)
Carried out Genotyping Quality Control (QC) on large scale human SNP data. Further, performed population analyses such as relatedness inference using IBD (identity by descent), admixture, GWAS, Mendelian Error analysis and association tests among populations and phenotypic data. Designed scripts and automated pipelines& workflow for variant-data analyses to process multiple genomic file formats.
2. Grants Writer (University College Dublin) (June- Aug 2020)
Researched, coordinated and wrote a H2020 grant proposal in the areas including metagenomics, biosurveillance and DNA/RNA sequencing technologies. Organized a multidisciplinary team of collaborators, performed weekly follow-ups and task distribution among collaborators namely UCD, ICEM, Irish Defence Forces along other EU SMEs (Small Medium Enterprises) specializing in life sciences. Prepared a Gantt chart, pert chart and prioritized and allocated the budget to achieve milestones over the 36-month term.
3. MSc project (Evolutionary Bioinformatics) (University College Dublin) (Apr 2019 - Aug 2019)
Evolutionary study on the proto-oncogene Myc using R, Python and bioinformatics softwares. Performed phylogenetic study on Myc and network analysis amongst its interactor genes across mammalian species. Customized pipelines on Linux machine (in Perl) for performing the large-scale sequence comparisons and phylogenetic analyses.
4. Undergraduate project (D2R Simulation) (SCOE, Pune university, India) (Jan- June 2018)
2D-Grid modelling and simulation of movement and binding of Dopamine Receptor (D2R) using
Coarse-grained model in MatLab. The steady state was viewed for D2R localization through MatLab data-visualization tools and the levels of D2R dimerizarion, trimerization and tetramerization were investigated.
5. Intern (Bioinformatics) (Sanfoundry, India) (Nov 2017- Feb 2018)
Researched and submitted 1000 Multiple Choice Questions on topics viz., alignment algorithms, gene-function prediction. Performed an in-depth study on a broad spectrum of Bioinformatics topics, while contributing to the global learning initiative.
