I have recently finished a biology PhD at the University of St Andrews, where I took on a lot of teaching responsibilities, and engaged with students ranging from 11 to 21 years old. I have found that the teaching style that seems to work best for me and my students is one of trying to lead the student to the answer by getting them to really focus and think about the topic, as well as encouraging them to be inquisitive. Every student is different, though, so I also like to adapt my teaching style to what best suits the student and their personal aims so that they get the most out of each lesson, and so that the lessons continue to be enjoyable and engaging. My current knowledge and skill level means that I specialise in teaching Biology up to and including A level, but I am also able to teach GCSE Maths, English (literature and language), History, along with Chemistry and Physics. Additionally, I lived in Belgium for 11 years and can confidently teach French up to A level.
As a PhD student, I taught undergraduate students and co-supervised a number of final year projects. The undergraduates whose final year projects I co-supervised all received firsts in their theses, and so I am able to help students achieve their potential. I successfully teach students by ensuring that they remain motivated and that their goals are clearly outlined by them and their parents so that we are all always working on the same page.
I have just submitted my PhD thesis which was based on decision-making in animals and was carried out at the University of St Andrews. Prior to this, I completed a Master's at Queen's University, Belfast on animal behaviour and welfare. My undergraduate degree, on wildlife biology, was completed at the University of South Wales, and so I have been studying biology at university level for a total of 8 years. For two years of my PhD I taught biology to undergraduates, and for four years I have been visiting schools as a STEM ambassador to talk to students, aged from 11 to 16, about science, often in an interactive way.
