My pedagogical philosophy is to introduce a new topic with real world examples. I have found that this is the best way to get the student interested in the topic and makes it easier to process the theory. I then spend some time working through the theory, with examples. Finally, I assign homework on the topic. Doing the homework is very important, as it brings together all of the learning from class.
