About the lesson
Name: Vaughan Jones. I am a friendly and experienced teacher of the violin, viola and piano and work with children and adults, from beginners up to Grade 8 and beyond. I focus on a tension free approach to playing, allowing students to fulfill their musical potential
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach violin and viola (beginners to post Grade 8), piano (up to Grade 5), chamber music skills, music theory and aural tests.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a Graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal College of Music, as well as having attended the Aspen Summer Music School in Colorado, U.S.A.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £10 for a 20-minute lesson, £15 for half an hour and £30 for a full hour.
- Where do you teach?
I enjoy teaching online via Skype (which I find has a better sound quality than alternative platforms). I also teach from my studio which is in Cheddington, Buckinghamshire. Students requiring violin lessons often travel from surrounding areas such as Leighton Buzzard, Aylesbury and surrounding Buckinghamshire villages, Berkhamsted, Tring, Hemel Hempstead, Amersham, Dunstable and Wendover
- When are you available?
I am available all weekday afternoons and evenings, some slots at weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach from the age of 7 upwards and am happy to take on adult beginners, improvers or advanced students.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall exams.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I take all lessons at a pace comfortable for each student and specialise in teaching a 'tension free' approach to playing where humour and musicianship is as important as technical mastery of the instrument. I am happy to help students through grade exams, but equally comfortable teaching people who are learning just for fun.

About Vaughan
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have over 20 years' experience teaching both children and adults. I have also performed with the London Philharmonic and Philharmonia Orchestras and now run a busy string quartet and string duo which you can listen to on: (concealed information)
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes.
- Where and with whom did you train?
Birmingham Conservatoire, the Royal College of Music, Kato Havas.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I have a wide range of students, from children to people of retirement age seeking to take up an instrument, perhaps one which they gave up earlier in life due to work and family commitments. I have students who are at post graduate level who need more advanced tuition, and am also able to help people with tension related playing injuries or nervous anxiety which can inhibit their playing.

. . .yesterday Robert played at a school concert, perfectly! Praise from teachers and other parents on how much he has improved since they last heard him perform and his school music teacher remarked she had never heard him play so well. So, clearly, something is clicking along the way and working. Thanks for being such a fab and patient teacher of Robert!
When I first went to Vaughan I had no musical knowledge or experience of playing an instrument and as an adult knew it would be a massive challenge. I can now safely say it was one of the best decisions I've ever made, these past four years have been a wonderful experience. From my first lesson I've felt at ease with Vaughan, the knowledge and techniques he's taught me have empowered me to play better and I consistently feel like I'm developing as a musician.
Vaughan is a superb violin and viola teacher. Within a lesson he brings together his superb technical knowhow with an extensive musical knowledge and a style of working which is fun, informative and where the student can clearly see and hear progress made. My son thoroughly enjoys working with Vaughan and has made significant all round progress in his playing.
Vaughan has taught my daughter Tara for the past 7 years. Over this time he has helped her move towards Grade 8 standard as well as developing an overall appreciation of music. Tara has always looked forward to the lessons and Vaughan has been patient and really encouraging over that time. We would recommend him without hesitation to anyone looking for music tuition. He's brilliant!
