Poems are composed of certain elements such as meter, rhyme, scheme, verse, and stanza. Before students can dive deeper into comprehending works of poetry, they must understand these characteristics. Meters are the rhythmic structure and are dictated by the number of syllables. Rhymes are quite self-explanatory. Yet, to have rhymes in poetry the last one or more syllables within the separate words match. Schemes refer to the rhyming pattern within a verse of poetry. Verses are used to describe the relationship between rhyme and meter in a poem. And, finally, stanzas are a group of lines that are within the verses of a poem. Stanzas follow a similar pattern and these patterns need to be respected in order to be called a poem. Knowing the structure and components of a poem is the best way to teach poetry and slowly work on your original pieces.
