Why Choosing the Right Secondary School Matters

The secondary school you attend can influence not just your Leaving Cert results, but your confidence, personal growth, and future academic pathways. Look for schools that align with your values, offer robust academic support, and foster a positive school culture.

To ensure an assessment, we have created a list of standards that cover the elements of a good high school education.

These standards encompass various aspects, including academic achievements, the proportion of students who progress to university, opportunities for participation in activities, the availability of support services, the qualifications of teachers, and the quality of facilities.

While this is essentially a personal decision, you don’t have to go about your decision alone. Make sure to seek advice from teachers, parents and guidance counsellors who can provide valuable insights and guidance in making this critical decision.

By taking all these factors into account, we can get a picture of what each school does and where it might have some weaknesses. This will help students make a decision based on their needs and goals.

The Subjects Offered by The Top Secondary Schools in Cork

If you are wondering what subjects you will have the option of studying at any of these secondary schools during Irish school holidays, you will find a slight variance. This is because schools in Ireland have three core subjects that each student must take unless they are exempt.

Every secondary school student in Ireland must study English, Irish and Maths as Core subjects.

Understanding the Leaving Cert

Students sit a minimum of six subjects, including core subjects such as English, Irish, and Maths. Results are calculated using your top six scores. Most schools offer additional options in science, languages, business, and the arts.

In addition to these three subjects, students will have some choice in the subjects they study. These subjects include business, science, music and language-related subjects.

While the Junior Certificate programme will have given students a foundation in many of these subjects, the Leaving cert presents students with the opportunity to expand on this knowledge and specialise in the subject.

For the Leaving Cert, students are required to sit a minimum of six subjects, leaving three options available for students to fill up with subjects of interest.

In 2024, nearly
6,800

students in Cork sat the Leaving Cert.

Students can, of course, choose to select more than three additional subjects, but this will come with a greater workload that can prove difficult to balance in what is a challenging assessment.

With that said, since the Leaving Cert assessment counts your top six results, it can also give students some security knowing that they have another exam to fall back on if things don't go their way in any one.

Business is broken down into Economics, Accounting and Business Studies. Students can also choose to study science subjects, such as Mathematics, Science, Biology, Physics, or Chemistry.

Practical subjects such as Metalwork, Music, Digital graphics and Art are also available. Students will also have the option to take a language, the most popular of which are French, Spanish, German and Italian.

Whether a school offers a particular subject is determined by the demand for it within the respective school. While not every school may facilitate classes in your preferred language, schools will often allow you to sit your exams in the subject and take your classes outside of your scheduled lessons.

Be sure to research the list of subjects offered by the school, as well as the number of students enrolled in each year. This will give you an understanding of the demand for your preferred subjects!
