Podcasts in English!

Where ever you get your podcasts whether it's with Apple, Spotify or the Google Playstore it doesn't matter, make sure you download Podcasts in Spanish repeat them aloud and write down words you struggle with. When learning a language, practice and repetition are key.

*TIP* Create a personalised English Phrasebook. This does not need to be anything fancy just a copy or notepad, with two different coloured pens, one for the English words and one for the translation. Every time you learn a new word or phrase you know you will use again, write it down phonetically and correctly.

Streaming Your Favourite Movies and TV Shows in English

This one may sound too simple, but, it has proven really helpful to people learning Spanish, Korean, English and other languages.

By just watching your favourite movies or TV series in English and turning on the subtitles so you can read along, you will get familiar with both the written and auditory words.

Watching something you have already seen several times means you are familiar with the storyline, this helps you focus on listening and comprehending what is being said in English.

Streaming apps allow this option for example Netflix, Prime Video and even Disney+.

YouTube Videos for Learning English

Watching YouTube videos can help you have fun while improving your English pronunciation and listening skills. You can basically find anything on YouTube...

To save you some time, I've narrowed down the list to the following 2 channels which I believe you will find particularly useful:

  1. ESLbasics - This popular channel is perfect for learning vocabulary quickly, as the bite-sized lessons are easy to follow. The host speaks slowly and clearly, making it easier for learners to understand.
  2. BBC Learning English - This is a helpful channel where you can get help on anything from studying for an exam to listening to the news.

Speaking Partners

When using an app like YouTube to learn a language, it's always a good idea to have a speaking partner so you can practice what you've learnt. Find a speaking partner who you can practice talking with as often as possible, even if he or she is not a native English speaker.

English for beginners is about trial and error so talk about the weather, your favourite vacation, or your past weekend. Conversation practice is key to building your confidence and basic English skills.

Language Apps for Learning English

Apps for learning languages focus heavily on oral practice. The purpose of these smartphone apps is to encourage you to learn how to speak as early as possible. Essentially, speaking a language enables you to use vocabulary, phrases, and grammar, and also helps you in making a conversion in no time.

Duolingo

Duolingo is an app that can help you memorize the basics of English grammar, writing, speaking and listening. The fun and friendly interface makes learning enjoyable. It's good for familiarising yourself with the basics, especially because it's repetitive.

This app is available to use for free, with ads and limitations however there is a plus version that comes at a price.

Babbel

Babbel is an English learning app that has a strong focus on vocabulary. Babbel also lets users learn to understand a language by completing and repeating phrases. Babbel focuses on helping English language learners acquire basic conversational skills.

Is Babbel better than Duolingo?

Babbel and Duolingo are two of the most popular and well-known platforms globally for language learning...

I've tried and tested both apps, and all I can advise is to go with whichever app suits your budget.

Yes, Duolingo offers some lessons free lessons for those on a tight budget... it's not saying the quality is inferior but you will receive a lot of advertising.

Again, go with your budget and your gut. But I've tried and enjoyed both apps.

"I'm very sensitive to the English language. I studied the dictionary obsessively when I was a kid and collect old dictionaries. Words, I think, are very powerful and they convey an intention."

- Drew Barrymore

The Best Websites for Learning the English Language

There are tons of web-based platforms that can help you learn a new language from scratch or develop your existing language skills from the comfort of your own couch.

Let's take a look below at a few of what I think are the best resources for learning English:

  1. BBC Learning English - This website offers a wide variety of English learning and teaching resources covering areas such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and much more. On top of all of this, as I've already mentioned BBC Learning English also has a YouTube channel.
  2. FluentU - FluentU enhances your language learning through the use of interactive real-world videos such as movie trailers, music videos, news, inspiring talks, and more. Captions in videos are subtitled and translated. Students can click on any word in the video to access in-context definitions along with example sentences. Videos also include quizzes enabling students to consolidate their language learning and enhance their comprehension.
  3. Busuu - Busuu helps learners improve their language learning skills through bite-sized lessons, tips, and guides. Learners can also take part in 1-to-1 lessons or group classes facilitated by professional teachers and tutors. Busuu interactive community allows learners to exchange pronunciation and grammar tips, share feedback on their language learning, get exercises corrected, and get language help from native speakers across the world.

Of course, there are other options for studying the English language, people do sometimes prefer to take actual courses with tutors or in a class.

However you decide to study English, I wish you the best!
