Let's start this article by asking the simplest of questions. Why do people seek out a tutor?

To continue learning. Learning, and particularly about the mind, means we are curious about what makes humans, well, human.

"Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young."

- Henry Ford

Understanding the Brain can Actually Help You Learn

Stanford University professor, bestselling author, and acclaimed educator Jo Boaler has spent decades studying the impact of beliefs and bias on education. In her book Limitless Mind, the professor introduces us to 6 keys which she uses to demonstrate how everybody is capable of constant learning throughout their lifetime.

This book is completely shattering in the belief that people are either creative or academic. It completely diminishes the theory that people must be segregated into groups of smart or slow learners, people will simply pick up things at their own pace and the mind is constantly adjusting and learning.

The 6 Key's Boaler introduces us to are as follows:

  1. Understand that your brain is always changing.
  2. Learn to embrace struggle, mistakes, and failure.
  3. Change your beliefs about your mind, and your brain will follow.
  4. Try multiple approaches to learning.
  5. Aim for flexible thinking rather than speed.
  6. Try collaboration.

Her research proves that those who achieve at the highest levels do not do so because of a genetic inclination toward any one skill but because of the keys that she reveals in the book. Our brains are not “fixed,” but entirely capable of change, growth, adaptability, and rewiring.

Getting a tutor who understands all of this will only enhance your own learning experience especially when it comes to subjects like Mental Health and Psychology which cover so much different information.

The Importance of a Tutor in College

Tutors can help students academically and professionally. Tutoring can help strengthen subject comprehension, boost confidence, and build important learning skills.

There's almost a double benefit for people who choose to seek tuition. They can focus on better understanding the subject matter through tutoring sessions and these benefits carry over. So that when students are studying on their own, they can focus and stay organised more effectively because they have someone holding them accountable.

Students might think they don’t have time for tutoring or that they would be better off studying on their own.

But tutoring can help them a lot with their coursework, so they have a solid foundation when the subject matter gets more complex.

The Importance of College Tutorial Classes

Let us start by explaining why a Tutorial Class, is not the same as a regular college class.

This is a study support offered to students by the course provider by tutors for the duration of the course.

A Tutorial is a teaching session given to one student or a small group of students, some colleges call them "Drop-in" Classes. These sessions are usually given to any students who are struggling with coursework or assignments, they are not officially graded instead they are to help or coach students.

Tutorials are designed to give you a space to engage more actively with the course content.

They give you the chance to discuss issues with fellow students and allow for more interaction than a traditional class. Each Tutorial/Drop-in is led by a tutor who is one of the teams teaching your course. Tutorials more often than not take place online, everyone is given a chance to ask questions, give opinions and even advice to other students. Most colleges will record each session and upload it to Moodle so that any students who miss the weekly Drop-in/Tutorial class will have access to any queries or suggestions that they may need later on.

Taking advantage of these classes throughout the year are a great way to get extra tuition minus the fees that go with it.

Psychology Tutors Ireland - Superprof

In Ireland, we have several tutors giving lessons in Psychology!

Their prices start at just €10 per lesson and range right up to €40 per hour. Most of these tutors offer the option to have lessons face-to-face or online, and many of them even give the introduction lesson free!

So let's break it down...

Those providing tuition with fees in the range from €10 - €15 are most likely to be students themselves. Many of whom are studying at a University or Doctorate level, some are even postgraduate.

These are the perfect tutors for those people who are studying at QQI level 5 and 6 or even in their first year of University.

Those who are offering tuition with fees in the range of €20 - €40 are all qualified in their field. Some have multiple qualifications for example they may have a BA in one subject and an MSc in another. These people have achieved some of the highest level qualifications possible in Psychology and therefore are the perfect research tool for students in need of tuition.

If you're pursuing an MSc or a Bachelors in Psychology, then it would be recommended that you choose a tutor with the most experience possible.

"Mental health and physical health are one and the same for me - they go hand in hand. If you aren't physically healthy, you won't be mentally healthy either - and vice versa. The mind and body are connected and when one is off, the other suffers as well."

- Kelly Gale

Mental Health Tutors Ireland - Superprof

As with Psychology, when it comes to Mental Health, there are so many options available on Superprof for people to choose from when it comes to choosing a tutor. However, the range of fees is a lot more fluctuating, they go from €10 right up to €80 and I'm about to explain why.

When y0u look for a Mental Health Tutor/Trainer/Coach on Superprof or any platform, you will of course be greeted by tutors for students studying the subject or modules of mental health but you will also be greeted with so many other professionals too.

People who work in areas such as:

  • Life Coaching
  • Young People Mental Support
  • Counselling
  • Health Care
  • Health wellbeing
  • Mental Health Support

So you see some of these people may be providing a different type of tuition, less academic more of a support. With that being said some of these people who offer tuition in a different area might be worth taking a class or two with, as they may have experience working in mental health services and can give you information during the research part of your assignment.

Tips When Choosing a Tutor

  1. Find a tutor with the right skills: Superprof lets you have a look at each tutor's CV so you can get a feel for their level of Mental Health or Psychology qualifications and expertise as well their teaching experience. But whether you choose a tutor with Superprof or find one elsewhere, we recommend you ask about their qualification level about their experience in teaching.
  2. Choose between different price points: private tuition can get expensive. If you have a budget, choose which modules you are struggling with and then find your tutor based on their level of experience in that area.
  3. Try before you buy: A stand-out advert doesn't always guarantee the ideal tutor. Superprof allows you to consult several tutors before you decide which one has the best methods to suit your needs.

Where ever you find your tutor, we hope you have a wonderful experience with someone helpful who can keep you focused and interested in your course and module as needed.
