The History of Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year traces its roots back to the Han Dynasty (202 BC–220 AD), when the earliest records of New Year celebrations appeared in the book Simin Yueling (四民月令). Originally tied to agricultural cycles and the arrival of spring, these early festivities focused on community, renewal, and preparing for the new season.

Legends also shaped the holiday’s traditions. The mythical beast Nian (年兽) was said to terrorise villages until people discovered its weaknesses—loud noises, fire, and the color red. These stories inspired customs still seen today, including firecrackers, red decorations, and dragon dances.

Over centuries, Chinese New Year evolved from a regional agricultural celebration into a global festival. Today, it blends ancient rituals with modern traditions, making Lunar New Year a cultural cornerstone celebrated worldwide.
