- Leah LaBelle

After School Study

Leading up to your exams it might be a good idea to stay after school to do your study. I know you're probably thinking that you already spend enough time at school and it's the last place you want to stay for two extra hours, but hear me out, there are plenty of advantages.

What are some of the benefits of after-school study groups?

  1. Students are in a comfortable, welcoming environment that is solely focused on maximising study; the school will ensure that there is minimal noise and no distractions. At home, it can be hard not to be distracted by the other things that you'd rather be doing but in school, you just can't do them, you have to study until the time is up.
  2. In most schools, students have access to an extensive range of study resources including stationary, exam papers in all subjects, textbooks and study guides.
  3. There is access to tea and snack breaks where students can discuss their study techniques, learn from each other and meet new friends, sometimes if you're having difficulty just getting a piece of information stuck in your head when you find out I have someone else is doing it it might make all the difference.
  4. You will be surrounded by like-minded people who also have the desire to do well in their exams and they encourage each other to work hard.
  5. After-school study groups help students complete their homework and most who attend obtain higher grades in examinations.

I highly recommend creating a study timetable. It means that your whole day isn't taken up deciding what subject to revise and when.

Don't think group study is for you?

Don't worry we still have more options, and you still have time.

Private Tuition

A good tutor can help students who have traditionally struggled with a subject begin to build confidence in their skills so that when it comes to exams, students are less nervous and more mentally and academically prepared.

There are other options out there if you don't get the points you are aiming for in the Leaving Cert, from Further Education Colleges to Work Experience and Gap Years, you have plenty of choices.

There are some really great benefits to working with a tutor, let us take a look at some below:

  1. A tutor will teach you at your own pace. When you find a tutor, you will get a more personalised education, your tutor will note what level you currently are at and create a personalised teaching program based on the individual.
  2. Fewer Distractions... We are all guilty of this, the more things around the less attention we pay. But that's yet another plus of having a personal tutor! Since private tutoring usually happens in a quiet and peaceful setting, there are fewer distractions. Tutors can give students their full attention, and students can fully focus on the material provided.
  3. Following a learning program suited to you is going to help you overcome some of the areas you struggle with most in whichever subjects you need. Most students see substantial improvement in their grades and test results after just a few sessions with a private tutor.

STEM courses are becoming increasingly popular! But the classics like Medicine and Accounting still remain popular among the Leaving Cert applicants for 2023.

A few Things to Keep in Mind When Choosing the Right Tutor

  1. Budget: How much do lessons cost vs How much you can afford? Just because they come highly recommended by someone doesn't mean you have to go with them, remember, if you have a set budget, don't blow it all on one or two lessons. Shop around and get the best value for money.
  2. Experience and Qualifications: This is where doing a little bit of research comes in handy, checking websites, social media sites and review pages, and when talking to potential tutors asking them about how many years of experience they have as a maths teacher. What level have they experienced teaching students before?
  3. Availability of Tutor: Is there a waiting list to have maths lessons with this tutor? How long will it be before you get to the top of the list? Are you willing to wait that long?
  4. Style of Tuition: There are so many different styles of tuition out there, especially in the area of maths whether it is video lessons or face to face. Have a proper discussion about the areas of maths you are struggling with and find out what their approach is to help you overcome the problem areas.

Giving yourself credit when you complete a task and trying to focus on things you can control can help when it comes to managing exam stress and anxiety when studying for your Leaving Cert.
