Computer Science is quite a vague term and is thrown around a lot but what exactly does it mean? Computer Science is the study of everything to do with computers; how they work, how they’re designed, how the code used on computers is produced and even the science of how electrons moving around on silicon can somehow scale up to be a stick of ram. Naturally, it covers a wide range of topics, it requires maths, scientific research, programming, problem-solving and logical thinking. Not everyone is suited for Computer Science but it is an excellent career path for those who are. It is a growing field and often high-paying, not to mention it will benefit you in any country, not just Ireland. This is why all the universities and colleges in Waterford have a Computer Science course and also why it has been introduced as a Leaving Cert subject.
First and foremost you have to approach every problem and every situation from a logical standpoint. It is a frame of mind and depends heavily on your ability to deconstruct problems and solve the constituent parts separately. The more you code and the more you get into the frame of mind you will begin to understand what a good programmer is. Math skills are a bonus but not a necessity, problem solving is far more important than algebra when it comes to Computer Science however, it cannot be fully dismissed either. Computer Science courses usually have a maths module where you’ll be tackling topics like “matrices”, predicate logic and yes even calculus. Depending on if you choose to specialise, maths may become more or less relevant to your Computer Science degree!
Oftentimes the most difficult part of a Computer Science course is developing the skills necessary. Students have to put in many hours of their own time researching, practising and revising to build and hone their Computer Science skills but this can be difficult when you take in all the work a student has to do. There are many modules and there are so many skills needed to be built from essentially the ground up. This is where a good tutor comes in, students can get a reliable source of practice and study with someone who knows what they’re doing. Consistent work is what is needed and regularly scheduled meetings can facilitate this. Not to mention the extra layer of responsibility and motivation working with a tutor provides. We all work a little better and a little harder when a teacher or a tutor in this case is working with us, urging us on and holding us responsible.
It's great knowing our tutors will provide sessions where students can steadily build up their skills and improve but what if that student is struggling with an aspect of their course? Well, a tutor is perfect for tackling difficult chapters, topics or whatever else it may be. They will already have encountered this difficult subject and would be able to provide advice and help on the matter. Not to mention once a tutor has gotten to know what type of student they’re working with, they will be able to provide more targeted and helpful advice. They’ll know how you think and more crucially, how you learn. They will be able to provide an alternate explanation to the lecturer and they can make personal notes that make a lot more sense to you, maybe you’re a visual learner, or maybe you’re an aural learner. In any case, our quality Waterford tutors will be able to facilitate you and will help you in any way they can. At the end of the day, if it's not working out at any time, you can always find another tutor easily with Superprof’s superb search tools!
