How can I get better at drumming?

Drumming is an intensive skill that requires focus, dedication and technical knowledge. The coordination required from drumming is quite different to other instruments, say for example you have some experience with guitar or ukelele, you won’t have a big advantage when it comes to drumming. So, the first thing that is absolutely necessary to get better at drumming is to become comfortable with the kit. Familiarise yourself with the feel of everything, make random drums, play around with them and just generally become accustomed to the feel of everything. After that, there are a few ways to improve at drumming. There are various exercises to increase rhythm control, technique, combinations coordination etc but the best way to improve is by watching professionals, list to music with drumming and most importantly practising, practising and more practice.

Can you teach yourself drumming?

Drumming can be self-taught, as all instruments can be self-taught. However, without guidance or instruction, you’re gonna sound like random crashing noises for a while. The best advice we can give you for complete beginners is to build up from the ground. The first step is to find a drum set. Practice is key, so if you don’t have reliable access to a set your progress will be stunted. You don’t necessarily buy one, but places rent or maybe your school has one available but of course, buying your own one is the most ideal. You’re going to be practising a lot of rudiments which are the exercises that form the foundation for all drummers. They develop patterns and techniques which will be necessary for playing complex songs. So, in summary, you can absolutely teach yourself but if you don’t have the passion or the motivation, you’re going to get frustrated and bored very quickly. When you’re by yourself you only have the internet and absolutely no experience to call upon to answer any potential questions.

How do drum lessons work

Drumming lessons can vary from instructor to instructor but this is the beauty of Superprof. It affords you a level of flexibility and customizability that no other service can match! It is also usually very affordable, Superprof works hard to make sure that everyone can at the very least find decently priced tutoring lessons online. Here are just a few formats in that drumming lessons could take place. They could simply be for fun where you have an experienced drummer playing with you, letting you have fun in a way that normal class wouldn’t. They can also hand-pick out exercises and songs to play with music sheets to guide you along. That’s another thing that could be learnt in lessons, how to write and read music for drums. It’s not unheard of for certain drummers to never get formal training and in fact, some of the most famous drummers simply rely on their instinct. However, if you want to learn musical theory and you learn how to play. Drumming lessons can easily be a mix of practical and theoretical. This is a great option for Leaving Cert students looking for a music tutor who can help with the theory test but also their practical (if they’re doing drumming for that).

What do Drumming tutors do?

Drumming tutors provide a lot more than what most people would initially expect. They do what all normal teachers do but also more. They provide drum lessons, create environments of curiosity and learning, inspire motivation and can even bring you down a path you never thought possible. Many students pick up a hobby, or subject and try a little but then think “I’m hopeless at this, I’m going to give up” but in reality, all they needed was a little bit of instruction and encouragement. This is particularly the case with music where all the fun music is held behind a wall of practice, exercises and theory. It can often sap the motivation and simply joy out of a subject but tutors can get around this restriction and bring back the simple enjoyment a new hobby or subject can bring someone. This is the power of a Drumming tutor, they can make a subject so much more accessible, interesting and engaging, increasing the chances of someone learning a permanent life skill, all online too!
