There are many ways people choose to learn Dutch or any language for that matter, Dutch classes are the traditional go-to way but what if there was a better way to learn, would you take it? Here are just a few simple other ways you can start learning a language online. Firstly, if you have Netflix or any streaming services you’ll have access to all the Dutch content you could ever need, pop on a few Dutch shows with subtitles and you’ll be improving multiple skills at once without costing yourself an extra cent. If you’re based in Ireland and can’t find Dutch classes here or you can’t go to the Netherlands, finding a free online course might be the thing for you. There are many courses out there that teach you the fundamentals of the language and of course, there are free apps and services like Duolingo or Memrise. Grammar can also be easily learnt online, entire dictionaries and grammar books are available and any specific grammar topic is just a few clicks away. If you’re determined enough, you can learn a great deal of Dutch online from the comfort of your home in Ireland.
There is no straightforward answer to this, some elements of Dutch will come easier than others and it's true that a lot of Dutch is strongly related to English. However, one thing that many English speakers in Ireland will struggle with is pronunciation. It is quite different to English but a native Dutch speaker will really be able to help with this element of the language as a tutor. On the bright side, most of the other elements in Dutch will be easier to learn than they would otherwise be in other languages. For example, many words will be instantly recognisable to an English speaker, especially if you already have some experience with German. Another positive aspect of Dutch is that it doesn’t have to be perfect to be understood, especially by the locals, you can get away with more mistakes in general in Dutch and as an added bonus most Dutch people have a high level of English. So if you’re struggling with something while in the country, you’ll surely get some help.
Dutch is a useful language if you ever plan to move to the Netherlands or even visit it, but if that isn’t enough to convince you, learning any new language will always have some benefits for you. Firstly, being bilingual will really help you career-wise. Knowing any other European language while being in the European market will look very good, it also shows your capacity to learn new things and accept other cultures. Secondly, it can help with your intelligence and memory! By practising vocab and storing an entirely new language worth of knowledge, you’ll be improving your memory. Lastly and thirdly it’ll allow you to talk to new people and push you to more social events.
So, you’ve now decided to learn Dutch but how are you gonna go about it? Dutch classes are the first thing to come to mind but that would be a mistake. Tutors have repeatedly been shown to be just as effective, if not more so without the heavy cost and commitment of a professional class. When you have a tutor you get a lot more personalised attention and care along with the flexibility of being the only student. If you’re learning Dutch to prepare for a holiday then you can get hyper-focused lessons from your tutor that will prepare you specifically for conversing with the locals in a holiday situation. This is in comparison to a general class where you would be fighting for the attention of the teacher with the other students without the ability to even decide what you get to learn. General classes can work for some people but if you want faster, more effective lessons in a more personal and comfortable environment, getting a tutor is the way to go!
