About Hazel

I am a violin tutor with over 9 years of experience and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education, specializing in Orchestral Strings. Throughout my career, I have successfully directed string ensembles, group violin classes, and youth orchestras. I focus strongly on chamber music coaching and encouraging collaborative playing among students. My skills include section leading, managing ensemble dynamics, tuning as a group, and fostering team musicianship. I have worked with schools, community centers, and chamber groups, helping musicians of all ages grow together through music. Creating a supportive environment where every player feels valued is very important to me. I believe ensemble playing brings a special joy that solo practice can't match. It teaches communication, listening, and mutual respect. Watching students develop both their skills and their confidence as part of a team is incredibly rewarding. Together, we explore the power of collective music-making. I'm excited to help you experience the unique magic of playing in an ensemble and growing through shared musical moments.

About the lesson

My teaching approach centers on encouraging creativity and freedom through improvisation in non-classical styles like jazz, folk, and world music. I guide students in creating melodies over chord changes, helping them develop a unique and personal improvisational voice. This method goes beyond learning notes—it’s about expressing yourself spontaneously and confidently.

I focus on building musical intuition by exploring different rhythms, scales, and phrasing options. Students learn to listen deeply and respond naturally, making each performance fresh and original. I’m skilled at supporting singers and performers who want to bring more emotion and freedom to their playing.

Lessons include practical exercises for experimenting with melody and harmony, along with tips on phrasing and dynamics. I encourage you to trust your ear and take risks in your playing. Together, we’ll unlock the inner jazz or folk fiddler within you.

My goal is to help you express your musical ideas freely while staying connected to the style. You’ll gain the tools and confidence to improvise with ease and creativity. Let’s explore your musical voice and make your violin sing in new and exciting ways.
