Accounting is such a vast subject, and a lot of people who want to study it in college have already taken business studies up to junior cert and then accounting for the leaving cert. The next question is whether you want to sample a QQI course or go straight on for a Bachelor's degree.

Studying Accounting and Business at QQI Level College

A lot of people will start off by studying Business, Economics or eBusiness QQI Level 5, which is usually a short course of 3 to 6 months and give your foundation into the running of the business and basic things like budgets and balance sheets as well as all the technical terms and some introduction to law when it comes to running a business either online or in person.

From this, you can move on to a QQI Level 6 course.

This will allow you to gain a qualification which will provide you with a good accreditation to work as part of the business in the accountancy team depending on which of the following you pick.

  • Purchasing and Procurement Course - Purchasing is a vital and value-adding activity in any organisation, leading to the need to understand its importance and the value it can bring to an organisation.
  • Finance Course - Finance module is designed to provide the learner with the understanding, knowledge and practical skills required to understand the basics of finance and how money works. By the end horse learners will be able to understand Financial Statements,  Budgeting and Cashflow Management, Costing & Pricing and Capital Budgeting.
  • Business Management and Advanced Bookkeeping Course - This course is designed for those who would like to work in a supervisory role in a business. The bookkeeping course builds upon previously acquired skills to increase our student’s management ability.
  • Fundamentals of Accounting and Finance (DBS Online Diploma) - The Online Diploma in Fundamentals of Accounting and Finance is run wholly online and provides students with introductory knowledge to four key finance and accounting areas. These are Finance management, Financial accounting (including Sage), Management Accounting and Business management and administration.

When you qualify with a QQI level 6 you are giving yourself the opportunity to earn an average of €36k Basic salary per year according to Indeed.

A master's degree in accounting can lead to higher-level positions with higher-paying salaries.
