Junior Cert English as an Adult

Where to learn? How to learn it? Are there any rules applying to adults who want to resume their education, particularly when it comes to the JCT?

Every year, lots of adults ranging from 18 years old and upwards are enrolled to take part in the new junior cert and continue with their education one step at a time.

These students are what the system calls 'Adult learners', people who for some reason or another were not able to do their junior cycle cert when they were young and are trying to resume their education.

While it is great to hear that adult learners can take the exam once again, there is one small detail to have in mind: how do adult learners take English courses and where?

The answer is quite simple: there are a lot of centres for adult education that focus on bringing older students up to speed with the current curriculum and making sure that they are providing them with all the tools they need to succeed when passing the test.

This includes further education and training, higher education and training, as well as many other flexible options. There are lots of different course types to help group similar courses or courses for which particular types of financial support is available.

You can go online and look for specific centres that have Adult Education and ask if they have Junior Cycle English courses to guide you through this new academic venture.

If you are considering embarking on this learning experience as an adult, it's important to understand what the goals are for this particular side of the new junior cert. English has very specific learning goals that include the following:

  • To allow students to be creative through language and to gain enjoyment and continuing personal growth from English in all its forms
  • To help students develop control over English using it and responding to it with purpose.
  • Build skills of oral language, reading and writing.
  • Engage personally with and think critically about an increasingly broad range of spoken, written and multimodal texts
  • Develop an informed appreciation of literature
  • Use students’ literacy skills to manage information needs and be able to synthesize and communicate appropriately
Gain an understanding of the grammar and conventions of English

As you can see, the objectives of the junior cert are to have you using English at the best possible level and have great comprehension and expression skills.

In order to achieve these goals, the curriculum is broken down as follows:

  • Reading
  • Personal Writing
  • Functional Writing
  • Media Studies
  • Drama
  • Poetry
  • Fiction

Costs of the Junior Cert English

Apart from the goals and curriculum for the Junior Cert English, prospective students should also bear in mind the economic costs of taking the examination.

Students sitting for the Junior Certificate or the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement (JCPA) must pay an examination fee. In early February of the exam year, the school sends parents who are paying the examination fee a form. The parent makes the payment through a bank and the bank must stamp the form. The parent then returns the form to the school.

Students whose parent or guardian holds a current medical card do not have to pay the fee. In the case of parents who have a current medical card, details of the medical card are put on the form and the parent then sends the form back to the school.

The examination fee for the Junior Certificate or the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement (JCPA) in 2020 was €109.

The examination fee for VTOS (Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme) and similar students were as follows:

  • A mix of Leaving Certificate/Junior Certificate subjects (3+) €116
  • Junior Certificate (3+ subjects) €109
  • 1 or 2 subjects - Leaving Certificate or Junior Certificate or a mix of both €71

Beginners English Courses with A Private Tutor

As if being an adult learner wasn't stressful enough, the junior cycle English assessment can be a daunting moment in any student's life.

That said, with the right resources, direction and help, it can become less of a burden and more of an exciting learning path to get back on track with education.

One of these great learning resources is Superprof. Superprof is a platform where we help students and private tutors on different subjects connect. Thanks to us, anyone from across Ireland can find the right private teacher. No matter where in Ireland you are located, there are thousands of great tutors specializing in helping adult students be as prepared as possible for this endeavour.

Why should you hire a private tutor to help you with your Junior English cert? There are many reasons why a private tutor is a good idea:

  1. They have one-on-one engagement with students who are looking to get back on track.
  2. They have a different perspective on the junior cert curriculum than what a regular teacher would have.
  3. They can help build self-confidence and self-esteem by helping you reach your objectives.
  4. They provide customized learning and will help you go over everything and anything that you feel you might be lacking.
  5. They can adapt the format to the student's needs, be it online or through webcam, once or many times a week, for however long they need.

A private tutor is a great idea to aid students in reaching their goals, especially around junior cert English. But, how to go about it?

The good news is that Superprof is a really easy-to-use platform. The first step is to search for the particular subject you are looking for and the area where you live. Once the results appear the next step is to look at the teachers' profiles and decide on the one that meets your expectations the best.

This particular step is super important since we have a very wide variety of profiles: teachers specialising in literature, adult learners and getting you where you need to be as an older student, others who are more focused on essay writing. But we are confident that with the right research you will find the best match.

In order to assure that you get the right person to help you with the Irish junior cert, you can ask some previous questions:

  • What is your experience as a private tutor?
  • What area of the English cert do you specialise in?
  • Do you give online classes or only in-person?
  • What is your teaching method?

Another tip we have for you is to look at other students' reviews. These students' reviews are an excellent way for you to get a real idea of what taking classes with a certain tutor is like and what you can expect from them and their particular teaching method.

If you are interested in a particular teacher or profile, you should know that most of our tutors also offer the first lesson for free, since they use it as a sort of interview for both parties. This is an excellent way to get to know each other, set goals and establish how you will reach the objectives for your classes.

Once you have this initial interview, you can start talking about the specifics of your courses, how often you will meet, when, where and in what manner.

The time has come to learn English with a private tutor! Take advantage of our private tutor network and get working on that Junior Cycle English cert.
