Chemistry is one of the fascinating fields of science offered to students as part of the leaving cert program. Given that the course is provided on such a colossal scale across all secondary schools in the country, there is bound to be some degree of variance in how the material is thought to students.

For this reason, it can help for leaving cert and college students to supplement their learning in class with a variety of different sources in order to ensure that they are left with a comprehensive understanding of the course in its entirety.

There is an abundance of both core and supplementary resources available to students studying the leaving cert chemistry course or at the college level. Having access to this material is certainly a great help, but it is still rather extensive and may prove difficult for students to navigate or comprehend fully, particularly when time is constrained in the final months of the course.

When it comes to knuckling down to your exam preparations and the dreaded revision sessions over the prior months to your assessment, finding a tutor can really help you with your learning.

A tutor can also prove to be valuable in ways that you might not have considered such as introducing tactics for the final exam and helping you to nail down your timing so that you can maximise your potential in the exam hall on the day.

Both the academic and work worlds have become more and more competitive in recent years. In this climate, more parents have been turning turn to private tuition to help their children reach academic success and make it to their dream university.

As the private education industry grew, so did the prices for hourly tuition. Many private tutoring centres and tutoring services have been created in recent years, and you can find thousands of private tutors in a matter of seconds by searching online.

With a huge difference in hourly rates, it might be hard to understand how much you should really be paying your private chemistry tutor.

In this article, I will walk you through the chemistry tutoring services available on the island of Ireland and give you a sense of what you can expect to pay for tutoring in the subject.

Why Study Chemistry In The First Place?

First of all, chemistry isn't the boring subject many people think it is. No, you won't have to learn the periodic table of elements by heart and be able to draw every molecule in the world. Chemistry is actually a fun subject that many students enjoy for its hands-on approach. Believe it or not, chemistry is actually one of the most popular sciences amongst Irish leaving cert and college students.

You'll have the opportunity to engage with many hands-on experiments as part of your study. Basic chemistry experiments often consist of measuring chemical concentrations in solution using pH indicators, extracting aromas through distillation from fruit peels, or identifying chemicals through chromatography.

It is also a great career path. The chemical industry has been turning in recent years and trying to find solutions for problems it created through the last 70 years including the overuse of chemical fertiliser, the contamination of aquifers, the overuse of plastic, and the pollution coming from fossil energy.

At the start of their career, young chemical engineers report earning a median yearly salary of €32,000 a year, but the average salary for an Irish chemical engineer is €60,000, with Chartered chemical engineers earning up to €80,000 a year.

Even if you decide that you don't want to pursue an education in chemistry after finishing school, it will still come in handy for your everyday life, after all, cooking is just a matter of chemical reactions that we use to make our food taste delicious, and food labels are nothing but long lists of chemicals. Even the tags of our clothing refer to chemical compounds. Understanding chemistry and its implication in our everyday life will make you much more aware of what you eat, breathe, and wear.

"Chemistry is necessarily an experimental science: its conclusions are drawn from data, and its principles supported by evidence from facts."

- Michael Faraday, an accomplished scientist renowned for his contribution to the study of electromagnetism and electrochemistry.

One-On-One Home Tutoring Lessons

Education professionals have noted a spike in demands for home tutors over the past couple of years, partly explained by the desire of the government to expand grammar schools throughout the country.

Having a personal tutor to revise the material from your chemistry classes alongside can be extremely beneficial. Learning from a professional chemistry teacher in a one-to-one setting can really help you to understand some of the more difficult topics on on the syllabus. Remember that they will have worked with many students in the past and will be able to prepare you for your exams by working through best practice techniques and past papers.

With almost 25% of all Irish students receiving private tuition at home, the demand for tutors has certainly skyrocketed in recent years, so too have the prices along with it! If you are looking at hiring a home tutor for your children, the average hour-long chemistry lesson should cost you about €22.

Of course, there are disparities amongst the different counties and you can expect to pay a little more if you are living in or around Dublin (on average, lessons in the capital cost around €25). University lecturers may even charge up to €100 an hour, but it is improbable that your child will need that level of expertise to succeed in school.

As much as the hourly rate of the tutor you will hire is important, even more, crucial is to be booking the right amount of lessons. On average a tutor-student relationship only lasts for 16 hours, with one hour of tutoring a week. You do not necessarily need more than that to get grades and confidence up and maximise the marks that you pick up in the exam hall!

Chemists also work with biological molecules such as enzymes. The synthesis of biomolecules has been one of the main achievements of the chemical industry.

Why Not Split The Bill?

Many students are also turning to group tutoring sessions as a means of combating the rising prices of private tutoring services.  One of your classmates might also need some extra chemistry studying time and if that is the case why not share a tutor with them?

Splitting the bill could make it easier to give your child the extra attention they need, and with only two students, tutors are still able to provide plenty of personal tutoring time.

Some educational centres in Ireland such as the Drogheda Grinds Academy are specifically offering small group tutored classes which can bring the hourly price of private tuition down to about €10.

While this might be great for parents who may not necessarily have a lot of disposable income, you also have to remember not to overwork your child. Sometimes less is best, and some students might just need a little bit extra attention or help with homework and study, to improve their grades significantly.

"You have to stay in school. You have to. You have to go to college. You have to get your degree. Because that's the one thing people can't take away from you is your education. And it is worth the investment."

- Michelle Obama, American lawyer, university administrator, writer, and former First Lady of the USA.

Online Chemistry Lessons

The online alternative is also on the rise, here students can access more affordable chemistry private lessons. Most tutors are willing to mentor students via webcam through applications such as Zoom.

On average, an online chemistry lesson should cost you about €15 or less and even though spending time face to face with a student is still the best way to tutor, technology is quickly bridging this gap, and many interactive whiteboard software allow chemistry tutors to see what their pupils are doing, even if they are not with them.

Online tutoring gives you access to tutors from all over the world, but bear in mind that Irish tutors will have the best knowledge of the secondary school syllabus!

Look at all the jobs you could do with a degree in chemistry.

Recycling plastic is a chemist trick.
Trash and especially plastics have been accumulating in giant landfills all around the world. Chemists are now trying to find new ways to recycle what we consider trash.

Find A Tutor on Superprof.

Whatever the format of tutoring you choose, one-on-one, small group, or online, most studies report that home tutoring is effective in improving a student's grades, but it is also a great way to improve a student's confidence during exam times, which many reports to be a factor in whether or not they succeed academically.

Students are able to select the tutor that they do their classes with, and decide according to their own specific needs and style of learning. It offers a lot of flexibility for chemistry students all around the country and can be a great way to jump up a few grades in the subject.
