"I just love France, I love French people, I love the French language, I love French food. I love their mentality. I just feel like it's me. I'm very French."

- Olga Kurylenko

French Night Classes

Night Classes usually take place in your local community college or community centre.

Any available lessons will be advertised on the website or Facebook page of the facility and usually run for 6-8 weeks (every school term). Most places offer both beginner and advanced lessons. The number of people attending these can vary in size meaning there could be anything from 10 to 30 people in your class, which is a lot.

Bear in mind, these classes start with the basics, from your 1,2,3's to your ABC's you won't be learning handy holiday phrases straight away but you will come to terms with the foundations of the french language.

It will feel a lot like being back in school, and you may even get homework and have to take an exam depending on the educational style of your french teacher.

Online and One to One French Tutors

A lot of students tend to prefer this style of lessons as they focus more on the individual student's strengths and weaknesses.

For many students, the most challenging aspect of taking a French course is the inability to focus for extended periods. Some learners find in bigger groups they get easily distracted by social media or other distractions.

This is one of the main reasons having a tutor on the other side of that screen might be super beneficial to you!

Your French tutor will not only have a clear strategy for you to reach your language learning goals but will be there to support you every step of the way.

For flexibility, most of the French tutors at Superprof offer you the option to take in-home or online lessons. This means you can learn whichever way is more comfortable for you, in your own space, at your own pace and at whatever time suits you.

I haven't even mentioned the best part yet, most of our tutors even provide the first lesson for free, yep that's right so all you have to do is go to the homepage type in the lesson you are looking for select a location and then all of the tutors will pop up most of them provide the first lesson for free and the prices for every other lesson will be available beside their name.

Online french lessons
Offline tuition, you have to travel to get the lesson, which means you are wasting your time while travelling back & forth. Online tuition helps you to save time as you will take classes over the internet. Also, you will get some extra time for self-study. - Photo by Mimi Thian on Unsplash

Music is great when learning French because you can use it for pronunciation, cultural aspects, and learning grammar all at the same time.

Learn French Using Apps

When it comes to Learning Languages Online, there are two apps that are neck and neck for the top spot, Duolingo and Babbel, and this trend is no different when it comes to learning French.

So, which is better for learning French, Babbel or Duolingo?

After some testing of the Apps and a lot of research here is what I found.

Duolingo

I like that Duolingo is free, and the interface is almost game-like. French is probably one of Duolingo's best courses for speaking thanks to features like audio lessons.

A common mistake people make with Duolingo is they expect it to take them all the way to fluency. (Of course, fluency is a funny thing to define. Everyone has their own interpretations.)

  • To finish a language tree (course) on Duolingo in 6 months, you will need to spend a minimum of 130 minutes per day on Duolingo, for a full 180 days. That’s 2 hours and ten minutes.
  • To finish a Duolingo language in one year, you’d have to spend 60 minutes per day on the app. Keep in mind that's assuming you don’t have to practice to earn more hearts (lives), AND that you’re not testing out of levels.

While Duolingo’s French course does a lot more to hit on passive learning than most of Duolingo’s other courses (thanks to things like stories, conversation lessons and podcasts), it’s still not an all-in-one solution for learning French.

Babbel

Babbel is not free, but for the cost, I personally think Babbel French is definitely worth it. I found the App to be fun, the lessons are fast, and I was having (very) basic conversations within the first 4-6 weeks.

Babbel does a quick assessment at the start and then decides whether you should take French tuition as a Newcomer, Beginner or Intermediate learner. Babbel is a good resource for learning vocabulary, everyday phrases and constructing basic sentences, especially for complete newcomers and beginners in a language.

The Verdict

In the end, the main difference between Duolingo and Babbel is that while Babbel focuses on a more traditional form of teaching a foreign language through comprehensive lessons, Duolingo tries to gamify your learning and offer a modern experience.

I just think Babbel is the better overall language-learning App, I do like that Duolingo offers a free version and how they try to gamify learning. But if you're serious about learning a new language, I think Babbel is the better app to have you chatting the lingo sooner.

Bonne chance avec vos amis de leçons!
