HYROX is the world's main fitness racing event. It's now made its way to Ireland. Have you heard of it? Do you want to take part? Here's our guide to HYROX.
What Is HYROX and Why Is It So Popular?
HYROX has quickly become one of the fastest-growing fitness competitions in the world. There are several reasons it's so popular, but the fact that athletes from different backgrounds and of different abilities can all compete certainly helps.⁵ From gym-goers to endurance runners, it's a fun challenge that keeps participants coming back.
HYROX is a global fitness racing competition that combines endurance running with functional workout stations. Every race follows the same format worldwide, making it easy to compare results across cities and countries. HYROX Race Format Explained
So what exactly is HYROX? Every event has a clear and repeatable sequence designed to test athletes across various disciplines.⁷ It's important to know exactly what you're in for and all the stations in a HYROX event.
Each HYROX race consists of 8km of running, broken into 1km segments, with a workout station after every run. These stations include movements such as sledge push, sledge pull, farmer's carry, lunges, and wall balls. The combination of strength and endurance makes HYROX a true test of hybrid fitness.
Running and Workout Stations Breakdown
workout stations in every HYROX race.

A full-body cardio station that targets the arms, core, and shoulders. It's often the first test of pacing, so going too hard early can impact the rest of your race.
One of the most demanding strength stations, requiring you to drive a heavy sled forward. It heavily taxes the legs and can quickly spike your heart rate.
Athletes pull a weighted sled using a rope, engaging the back, arms, and grip. Technique and rhythm are key to avoiding early fatigue.
A high-intensity movement combining burpees with forward jumps. This station is mentally tough and can disrupt your breathing if not paced well.
A 1km row that tests cardiovascular endurance and efficiency. Strong pacing here can help you recover slightly before the next station.
Carrying heavy weights over a set distance challenges grip strength, core stability, and posture. Dropping the weights costs valuable time.
Walking lunges with a sandbag placed across the shoulders. This station builds leg fatigue and requires balance and control.
A combination of squats and overhead throws to a target. As the final station, it's a true test of endurance, coordination, and mental resilience.

of running.
HYROX Divisions: Open, Pro, Doubles, and Relay
HYROX offers several divisions to suit different athletes. Open is ideal for beginners; Pro increases the difficulty with heavier weights; Doubles allows two athletes to share the workload; and Relay splits the race across a team of four. This flexibility makes HYROX accessible to a wide range of participants.
Designed for the majority of participants, the Open category uses standard weights and is suitable for beginners and intermediate athletes. It's the most popular entry point into HYROX.
The Pro category follows the same race format but with heavier weights and stricter standards. It's intended for experienced athletes looking for a greater physical challenge.
Two athletes compete together, sharing the workout stations while both complete the running segments. This format allows participants to split the workload and support each other throughout the race.
A team of four athletes divides the race, with each person completing specific sections. This makes it the most accessible option for beginners or groups wanting a team-based experience.
How to Train for a HYROX Event
HYROX is more than just general fitness.⁷ The event demands a specific combination of endurance and strength.⁷ HYROX training should reflect the varied nature of the race, focusing on consistency and adaptability. Look to a well-rounded approach to handle fatigue and maintain performance rather than focusing on excelling in a particular station or two.

Hybrid Training: Running Meets Functional Fitness
Train your body to switch between cardio and functional movements, as this is the core of every HYROX race.
Practise running immediately after workouts like sled pushes or lunges to simulate race fatigue.
Blend exercises into continuous workouts rather than isolating movements to improve endurance and flow.
HYROX isn't just strength or cardio, so your training should develop both equally.
Good technique in exercises like rowing or wall balls can save energy over long distances.
Weekly Training Structure and Key Workouts
Include steady runs and interval training to build endurance and pacing.
Focus on lower-body strength, sled work, and functional movements.
Combine running with exercises like burpees, carries, or rowing.
Replicate race conditions with multiple stations and running intervals.
Allow time for rest, stretching, and injury prevention.
Common Training Mistakes to Avoid
Many athletes focus too much on strength and underestimate the 8km running component.
Too many high-intensity sessions can lead to fatigue or injury.
Going too hard early in training or races often leads to burnout later.
Without practising full or partial race formats, transitions can feel overwhelming.
As fatigue sets in, form often breaks down, increasing injury risk and reducing efficiency.
How to Enter HYROX Ireland Events
It's fairly easy to enter a HYROX event.⁶ However, with events becoming more popular, it's worth getting in early.⁴ Look into the ticketing process to make sure you don't miss out.⁶

HYROX Tickets: When and How to Buy
HYROX events typically open registration in stages, with early access and general release windows depending on demand.
All official entries are sold via the HYROX website or its regional ticketing system.
Major races like London or Dublin can sell out within days, especially for popular divisions.
Having a HYROX account ready helps speed up the checkout process when tickets go live.
You'll need to select Open, Pro, Doubles, or Relay during registration, and spots are limited per category.
Pricing, Categories, and Entry Tips
Entry costs depend on the event and category, with Open typically the most affordable and Pro slightly higher.
Prices vary by event and demand, with premium locations sometimes costing more.
While the total cost is higher, it's shared across two or four athletes.
Some events increase prices as they fill up, so booking early can save money.
Pro divisions involve heavier weights, so choosing the right level is important for performance and safety.
What to Expect on Race Day
Race day at a HYROX event is exciting.⁴ This is a unique competition and differs from CrossFit in many ways. Athletes move through a clearly organised sequence of stages.⁵
Event Check-In and Start Waves
Athletes must check in before their race time to collect race packs and confirm entry details.
Each participant is assigned a bib and electronic timing chip to track performance across the race.
Most events include instructions on race flow, station rules, and safety guidelines.
Athletes begin in timed waves to manage crowd flow and ensure smooth transitions between stations.
Designated zones allow athletes to prepare physically before entering the race arena.
Atmosphere, Spectators, and Finish Line Experience
HYROX events take place in large indoor venues, creating a controlled and immersive race environment.
Events feature DJs and commentators to keep energy levels high throughout the day.
Friends and family can watch multiple stations up close, unlike at many outdoor races.
Athletes and spectators can follow progress in real time, adding a competitive edge to the experience
Crossing the line is a major highlight, often accompanied by announcers, crowd support, and official results recorded immediately
Is HYROX Right for You?
The appeal of HYROX lies in its accessibility.⁵ There are multiple entry options for different fitness levels.⁵ There's also a clear progression path so you can get started and move up in the world of HYROX.⁵
Fitness Levels and Accessibility
HYROX offers an Open division with manageable weights, making it accessible to general gym-goers.
Unlike some competitions, anyone can register and take part without needing prior results.
With Pro, Doubles, and Relay options, athletes can choose a level that suits their ability.
Participants should be comfortable running multiple kilometres, as the race includes 8km in total.
Familiarity with movements like lunges, carries, and rowing helps performance and reduces fatigue.
HYROX vs CrossFit and Traditional Races
HYROX uses the same format worldwide, while CrossFit workouts change regularly and unpredictably.
HYROX places more emphasis on sustained effort and pacing, whereas CrossFit often prioritises maximum intensity.
Unlike traditional races, HYROX combines running with functional workouts at every stage.
HYROX follows a fixed indoor format, while obstacle races depend on terrain and changing challenges.
It blends endurance and strength in a predictable, repeatable format that appeals to a wide range of athletes.
