Ireland During World War II 🇮🇪

Ireland maintained a policy of neutrality, known in Ireland as 'The Emergency', which was heavily supported by the local population. The Irish government aimed to protect its newly gained sovereignty, fearing that this global conflict would pull them back into the control of the British government as well as devastating the local population at the same time.

The conflict brought rationing, fuel shortages and strict government controls, despite the country remaining outside the fighting. The war nevertheless had a major impact on daily life, as the Irish government prepared for potential attacks and thousands of Irish citizens volunteered to serve in the British armed forces. Meanwhile, Ireland continued to navigate complex relations with Britain while protecting its neutral status.

The tide begins to turn in the Pacific, North Africa and on the Eastern Front

1944–1945

Allied offensives close in on Germany and Japan; Germany surrenders in May 1945 and Japan in August–September
