About Sharon

My saxophone teaching philosophy centers on creating a supportive and inspiring environment where students develop strong technical skills while exploring their individual musical voices. I emphasize the importance of foundational skills like breath control, embouchure development, finger agility, proper posture, articulation, and tone quality, which together build the foundation for expressive playing. Intonation and rhythmic precision are key areas I focus on, helping students develop a reliable and beautiful sound. Improvisation is woven into every stage of learning, starting with simple melodic ideas and expanding to complex harmonic concepts, so students gain confidence in spontaneous musical creation. I teach music theory as a practical tool closely tied to repertoire and improvisation, making abstract ideas accessible and applicable. Students choose repertoire that excites them, spanning genres from jazz standards to contemporary pieces, which keeps lessons relevant and fun. Together, we set clear, attainable goals and establish practice habits that fit each student's lifestyle. I utilize technology such as recording devices, slow-down software, and backing tracks to enhance learning and encourage self-assessment. A particularly memorable teaching moment was guiding a student to confidently perform a jazz solo at a school concert, marking a turning point in their musical journey. My aim is to empower saxophonists to become skilled, creative, and passionate performers who enjoy every step of their musical path.

My approach to teaching saxophone is grounded in the idea that strong technique enables artistic freedom, and that music is a powerful form of personal expression.

I guide students through fundamentals like breath support, embouchure control, articulation, and finger coordination, building a healthy technical foundation that supports varied musical styles. Alongside technique, I emphasize ear training, music theory, and rhythmic accuracy to enhance musical understanding and improvisation skills.

I tailor lessons to individual students’ preferences, incorporating jazz, blues, funk, pop, and classical repertoire, with a focus on developing phrasing, tone quality, and emotional connection. Improvisation is a major part of my teaching, broken down into manageable steps that include scale work, melodic development, and rhythmic variation, encouraging creativity and confidence.

I use technology tools such as recording apps, slow-down software, and backing tracks to support engaging, productive practice. Performance coaching is integrated throughout to help students develop stage presence, manage performance anxiety, and connect authentically with audiences.

I foster a positive, supportive learning environment where students feel safe to explore and grow. One student’s transformation from hesitant beginner to confident soloist in their school jazz ensemble was a highlight of my teaching career, exemplifying the power of personalized instruction. My ultimate goal is to cultivate technically proficient, expressive saxophonists who love making music.
