About Tom
I am an experienced freelance journalist who has written for most of the major publications in Ireland and the UK. In an era awash with fake information, slanted, erroneous and polemical online content, I feel the need for traditional reportage techniques is more acute than ever. If you have ideas for articles and topics you would like to see published, I can mentor you in the do's and don'ts of print journalism. My areas of experience include both reportage of current affairs and feature writing on ongoing themes and issues.

First off: finding ideas: how do you discover new angles and areas that will pique the interest of editors and ultimately, readers? I will provide tips on finding subject material. How do you structure an article? How do you research a piece without resorting to a Google search and simply rehashing another journalist's work? I look at the basics of fieldwork and research. I provide tips on interview techniques and avoiding a backlog of superfluous data. I will guide aspiring journalists on the art of making a pitch to editors. Most media outlets are besieged by ideas for freelance pieces and I offer tips on how to improve your odds for getting commissioned.
