About William
Hi! I'm Will :)) I had a tutor when I did my GCSEs and A-Levels. I had to get a tutor to help improve my maths grade. Without that help, I wouldn't have made it through! I hope I can offer that same help. I know there are a lot of people out there that just don't mess with English Literature, and I get that. But I hope just by talking about these pieces - Shakespeare, Poems, whatever you need help in - and using my knowledge of the world of literature, I can help you see all the cool stuff out there in a heap of (don't get me wrong) quite boring literature. There's always cool stuff to find! And identifying your interests is the first step to being able to write a decent essay. And if you just need help with terminology, techniques, how to write, etc., of course I can help with that too! I wouldn't have been able to get my GCSEs done without my tutor, that's for sure. And I just want to offer that same help back!

I have two degrees: a Master's in Playwriting and a Bachelor's in English Literature, from the University of Edinburgh and the University of York respectively. These qualifications have made me a skilled critical writer and essayist. I have written successful academic work on The Classics, Poetry, Theatre, Modern Poetry, Shakespeare, Experimental Literature, Film, Novels and more. If your child/student is struggling with critical analysis on any level, I can help! My Master's qualification in Playwriting has also made me extremely adept at formal Creative Writing. So, if your child/student would like some extra help in producing and structuring creative work for their English GCSE (25% of their mark), I can help with that also! Insofar as lessons go, they are one hour a week, online or in person if you are an Edinburgh resident. I will help teach by first and foremost learning more about the student and where they are struggling (Poetry, Essay Writing, Creative Writing, etc.). Then, my approach is to always follow the student's interest first! For instance, if they think the blood and gore of Macbeth is the ONLY cool bit, then we can start work on how we might make that into an essay! Through following their interests, I can begin to engage them in critical thinking exercises related to their interests that will help develop their thoughts. We will look at how to properly structure their work - be it an essay or a piece of creative writing - using diagrams and exercises, such as going through essays and identifying structural modes, or going through stories and identifying plot points. I can teach to a range of ages, which will alter what we focus on in our sessions; for GCSE we will focus on how to write critically about their interests, for A Level we will focus on structural theories. For ages younger than GCSE, I will have a briefing with the student's parent/guardian on what areas they require help in and this will be the primary focus.
