About Drew
I'm an academic, writer, composer and keen educator with 25 years+ of tutoring experience. I cover all the syllabuses - AQA, Edexcel I/GCSE, OCR, Eduqas, CIE IGCSE etc. I'm particularly expert on A levels and Shakespeare, but everything from Chaucer to contemporary literature is grist to my mill. If you're a bit stumped by any particular text, we can focus on it and make it one of your strengths. At A Level, you need to know about context, critics, essay structure and - most often neglected - how to show your individual appreciation of a writer’s literary or dramatic technique. Together we can increase your confidence in all these areas, gain deeper insights, and help you clarify your own arguments and articulate your ideas. At I/GCSE and in school entrance exams, it’s all about showing comprehension - especially of what is implied, rather than stated explicitly, having the vocabulary to do so, and writing with clarity and impact. I have also taken students through exams independently (for example if you have left school, but want to retake the English Literature A-level to get that A* grade. Should you be considering applying to study Literature at Oxford or Cambridge, I can show you how to approach analysing & appreciating unseens. I have helped students with the Westminster Challenge & with 13+ entrance to other leading schools. If you wish to share the cost of tuition with another student or students you know by scheduling a group class (slightly more expensive - £75 ph, but it is divvied up!) , that's possible, just drop me a line. Deepen your comprehension of English language and your insights into Literary texts and the contexts in which they were written. Strengthen your arguments, enhance the impact of your essays, sentence structure and phrasing. English Literature is to be ENJOYED - in exams it helps to show that YOU enjoy it, as we will in our lessons. Even Shakespearean tragedy has comedy in the mix (less in 'Macbeth', admittedly, though the Porter's part contains the original of all those 'Knock knock' jokes).

Deadly! A very engaging 30 min trial lesson. Drew has great knowledge on An Inspector Calls with some interesting topics raised. A war poem was also discussed, which Drew read in a really animated engaging way. There was just the right amount of two way conversation to provide excellent engagement for both parties. We hope to do many more lessons!

Deadly! From D to A*
Andrew coached my son for about a year. My son had very little understanding, interest and appreciation for literature when he started. Gradually he developed a strong interest in discussing with us, the main themes of each book he read with Andrew. He was able to appreciate what was happening in history at that time / setting of the stories. The maturity in reading is what delights us as parents over the A*. But of course the A* gives my son the confidence to further push boundaries’
Andrew does not push or drill (which I was pushing for when we began), he met my son where he was and stretched his thinking. Also gave him skills n directions to tackle the exam questions.

First of all, Andrew is an extremely flexible and punctual tutor. He knows how to accommodate his students by presenting lessons in the most optimal way.
Andrew's efforts with my son have made him achieve his fullest potential in the A-level subject of Eng. literature, which is something none of his teachers were really successful in doing before. Andrew is an observant and insightful teacher; he is well-equipped to judge and motivate my son's academic progress.
Andrew follows what goes on in school as well. He can thus understand just what is being demanded from his student's areas that need improvement. He is very involved with my son outside their tutoring sessions. He regularly sends emails about books or critical articles that are meant to help my son in his academic journey. Drew has been the most amazing tutor! I have gained so much confidence in English over the past few months and it would never have been possible without him.
Andrew helped my daughter with her A-level retake.
