About Sebastian
My name is Dr Sebastian (Seb) Tym and I am an associate lecturer in early modern history at Plymouth University. Having recently received my PhD in Art History from Exeter University where I also taught for many years, I currently split my working week between lecturing, coaching and instructing at my local fencing club, and working as a private tutor.
I have five years' experience in university teaching and before that worked in the heritage sector as a public lecturer and events coordinator in castles across the southwest of England. As a tutor, I specialise in supporting undergraduates, though I can cater to GCSE all the way up to PhD level. Whether you are looking for extra tuition in your subject, help with essay writing and assignments, or support in breaking through to the next grade boundary, I will be happy to help.

Lessons typically last one hour, with 5 minutes warm-up time and plenty of time for discussion before the end. Before I take on any paying clients, I ask that we meet for a short, 10-15 minute (free) discussion of what their needs are and how I can best go about supporting them. I do not use pre-packaged resources. I will personally tailor lessons to what my client(s) need, using teaching materials which I have built up over many years of professional practice.
For several years whilst I was a student, I volunteered with the National Autistic Society and, through my involvement with the NAS, contributed to developing resources to support young people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in secondary education. I have recently continued this good work independently, having between 2022-2023 developed two further educational packs for university students with ASD for the University of Exeter. These packs are published with Exeter University and are available free of charge. The above having always been something of a "soft spot" for me, I am an expert in supporting students with ASD, and would particularly welcome clients with such (or similar) diagnoses.
