About David

Hi there! Do you want an experienced, native, teacher to help you discuss complex topics in English? Then join me on your English speaking journey! I am an experienced English teacher living in the UK who has been working online and offline since I qualified through the CELTA (Cambridge English Language Teaching for Adults) course. CELTA is the most respected UK ESOL qualification and includes an intensive English teaching course involving teaching practice and the study of the latest teaching methods and relevant linguistic theories. I completed this course with the highest (A) grade, in 2017. Since then I have developed my style and technique to focus on the teaching methods which I feel benefit students most. I have built a collection of videos, songs, articles and other English materials to help students develop their skills in a relaxed and productive way that focuses on their needs and interests. Aside from teaching I have a first-class degree in Philosophy, and have a wide range of interests in academic, artistic and cultural topics, I also play music, cycle, play Dungeons and Dragons (and yes I have some lessons on that if you are interested), and have a number of other hobbies and interests. I am also interested in and active around social issues in my country and my area and have a deep concern for human wellbeing around the world. This helps me create a learning environment that is inclusive to students of all backgrounds. My broad range of interests also helps me to create interesting and varied lessons, and to be flexible and tailor lessons to my students. And, of course, I am interested in language, both English and other languages, and study several languages in my free time, including German, Spanish, Welsh and French. Although I am sure you will be better at English than I am at any of those!

Do you want to improve your English conversation? Want to discuss complex and sometimes controversial issues? Want to study in a fun, relaxed and inclusive environment? I am a CELTA-qualified English teacher with 7 years' experience teaching online and in the classroom, and a native British English speaker. My major focus is on speaking lessons with students at the higher levels of English learning (B2, C1 and C2). In my lessons you will have the chance to engage with English through discussion of a wide range of topics, helping you to develop conversational skills and advanced vocabulary and to get you thinking in English like a native speaker. Want to learn the right vocabulary to discuss relevant and current social and political topics; from democracy and global conflict to queer culture and feminism? Or look at a diverse range of mainstream and alternative culture from rock, R'n'B and rap music to cinema, comedy and even Dungeons and Dragons? Or do you want to explore complex ideas like history, philosophy, psychology and economics? In my lessons we can use real English resources to dive into real topics and discussions with real relevance to our lives and the world we live in. Through one-on-one discussions of authentic English media we can develop your skills by exploring a wide variety of topics in an effective, enjoyable and non-judgemental learning environment. I have prepared materials on a huge range of topics including music, philosophy, media, art, history, British culture, politics, film, psychology, current events, social issues and many more. I also like to give space for students to direct their own learning; so if you want to select a topic that you want vocabulary for, a life event you'd like to prepare for (for example a job interview or presentation in English), or even just a favourite song you would like to understand better, we can build a lesson to suit your needs. Speaking lessons may sometimes seem like an easy option, as they do not involve structured tasks and materials as you might see in a textbook, however, in my 7 years of experience I have found that higher level students who choose speaking lessons over more traditional textbook lessons advance faster, as conversation lessons build your fluency and confidence and encourage you to think in English rather than just use it to solve a problem. My lessons are 50 mins. and are suitable for learners of all ages but you must have CEF level B2 or above (B2, C1, C2). Lessons are open and inclusive to students of all backgrounds and nationalities, including queer, trans and neurodivergent people. If you’re unsure of your level - for B2 or above you’d usually be able to understand native English media to a reasonable extent - for example being able to watch short native English films, TV shows or online videos with English subtitles, and being able to have a basic conversation in English.
