Horror, Sci Fi and comic books! How to translate Poe into Kirby:

One of my best English courses is a horror and a science fiction course. Five groups translate a coherent story from text to cartoon. It's a good genre recognition exercise and presentation exercise. This provides a nice mix of teacher-led blackboard teaching and a more student-led, project-oriented teaching that results in a group presentation or a student hand-in. That way I get around the four learning rooms.

Battlerap: Harald Blåtand vs Ibn Fadlan: Viking vs. Emir, who wins?

My best story progression is based on battle rap and youth culture. I select two historical figures and divide the class into two teams. Each team must write a battle rap based on sources and biographical information about their historical figure. The course can be combined with music and possibly media studies. Optimally, you can hold an annual history battle rap tournament, where the high school's history classes compete against each other.

Security and desire based on authority

I work hard with my students to create a well-functioning class culture where safety and desire are key words. With a smile and a good welcome to the students when the class begins, you can go a long way in terms of building a secure relationship. Professionalism is good, but safety and the desire to be in class have first priority. This is my experience from both Birkerød Gymnasie, where the students came from homes with solid educational backgrounds and strong social and financial capital, and from Frederiksberg HF and FGU Helsingør, where the students had more challenged backgrounds.
