About Sara

I am a recent graduate from the University of Houston where I completed my Bachelor's of Science in Psychology as a member of the Honors college. I have about five years of full-time professional tutoring experience, and I am currently teaching both independently and in partnership with school districts across the country. I teach subjects across all age groups and have worked with learners from all sorts of backgrounds. Resuming education is a monumental challenge and I applaud anyone who is making the effort to further their education, no matter what your motivations may be. I am here to support you through your journey to reach your goal, and I am known for being patient, flexible with complex scheduling needs, and knowledgeable in my work. Whether you are close to high school age or have been out of school for decades, I am ready to help you get caught up and am confident that we can get you feeling your best when it comes to your education. As a bit of background on my own educational history, I took 14 AP classes in high school, earning college credit and high grades for all of them, most notably a 5 on AP English Language and a 4 on AP Calculus AB. When I was a senior in high school, I helped my underclassmen friends study for the SAT and other classes, giving me my first experience with teaching others. I started working on SAT prep myself when I was still in middle school, so I have a lot of experience with standardized test preparation and how tests like the SAT are structured. I started teaching college level subjects and expanding my tutoring repertoire to include adult learners and the GED test while I was pursuing my undergraduate degree, and have now gotten to a point that I have taught students of all ages from all over the world. I genuinely enjoy teaching, and I would love nothing more than to see my students succeed.

I keep up with any changes to the exam or its structure and I continue to research the best studying methods to make sure everything I teach or recommend is up to date and based on best practices. I personalize all of my lesson plans to each student's specific needs, and will start working on the lesson planning during our free introductory session. The GED is a test that people need to take for a very wide variety of reasons, and as such, GED students come with a wide variety of differing needs. Life often takes us in directions we never saw coming, and there are so many obstacles to continuing your education that it can at times feel impossible. The good news is, you are not alone. I am here to support you through your journey to pass your GED test, and whether you have been out of school for a short time or haven't touched a textbook in years, we will get you caught back up and ready to move forward.
The first thing we will need to do is discuss your timeline for taking the GED, including your goal for how quickly you want to be done with tutoring. We will discuss how long it has been since you took math or English classes, then we will review some practice test questions over important content areas, and lastly, I will evaluate how much or little tutoring you need. After our free introductory session, I will give you a recommendation for any adjustments that may need to be made to your timeline, how frequently I would recommend you schedule tutoring sessions, and how long I think it will take for you to reach your goal score. Within the first few sessions, I will finalize a list of topics that need to be reviewed specifically, and we will narrow down which areas of the test need the most focus.
I always warn my students who are preparing for big exams that tutoring does have to be a supplement to studying you are doing outside of sessions, especially if you are not currently enrolled in any related classes. To put it into perspective, if you are not doing any studying outside of tutoring, then I would recommend you schedule at least 1 hour of tutoring per day, 5 days per week to make sure you have the support needed to retain and fully understand each concept. I will give you tips and guidelines for how much to study, what to study, and when to study between sessions, and I will provide you with materials to work with independently. I try to avoid formally assigning homework, and I do not ever expect any worksheets I give out to be turned it at a specific time. You will always be provided with answer keys for anything I give you to work on outside of sessions unless specifically discussed otherwise. I am used to accommodating and working with busy or unpredictable schedules, and I am happy to work with you on a plan for studying outside of sessions. I work hard to keep my teaching style adaptable and ready to meet any student's specific individual needs, meaning that I will also work with you to adjust how we plan tutoring sessions to make sure you are getting the most benefit possible from your lessons.

Details

My GED tutoring sessions are priced lower than the other subjects I regularly teach because I want to acknowledge that most people who are preparing to take this exam are already facing extenuating circumstances. With all of the added barriers to continuing education, my hope is that the competitive pricing can potentially take some of that burden away. For this subject specifically, I am flexible with pricing and am open to discussing budget needs for students who need more than 3 sessions per week and/or need tutoring for more than 6 months. This will be decided on a case-by-case basis and is not a guarantee that I can always offer lower pricing.

I accept payments through Superprof directly, though I prefer to receive payments through Paypal or through Zelle. I do offer my first lesson for free as a chance to get to know each other and ensure that I can meet your needs.
