About Manuel

Nice to meet you, I’m Manuel. I’m a French native.

I’m extremely passionate about French and languages, especially Asian languages, literature and art. In order to deepen my understanding of different cultures, I’ve traveled to countries such as Peru or Japan.

After a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Spanish and a Master’s Degree in International Studies (in English), I have been working since 2017 as a writer and translator for blogs and websites. I’ve also started my own website about languages.

In 2020, the Covid crisis started. It made me think I wanted to do a job where I could share what I love. That’s why I’ve started offering French and English lessons. While doing that, I’m studying Japanese as I would love to teach Japanese literature at the University level.

Hello !

You need to learn French, but you’re having trouble grasping some concepts? The way you have been taught until now does not suit you? If you want something simple, efficient and made for you, I can help.

- Why I teach French -

When I was a child, I started reading grammar books and poetry works because I thought it was fun. I love discovering new rules and finding the best way to say something. Plus, I like to elaborate language games and exercises.

I really love the French language.

However, I know that some people might not like it that much. French can seem complicated, boring or annoying. But, if you change perspective, you might be able to enjoy it.

With these classes, I would like to show you how you can overcome difficulties and what is interesting and lovable about the French language. To do this, I will offer classes which takes into account your goals and interests.

- What can I do for you? -

When learning French at school or through a training program, the teacher generally has to follow a specific curriculum, and he only has a limited amount of time.

However, the curriculum does not necessarily correspond exactly to your personal goals. In addition, you may need more or less time than other learners: everyone has their own pace.

My classes can focus on you, and only you. Lessons, exercises and learning materials are chosen or crafted according to your demands.

I have worked with people of various ages and backgrounds: Peruvian children, French jobseekers and retirees, or young adults from Afghanistan or Georgia. I will take into account your temperament, your rhythm and your habits.

- Some examples of goals I can help you with -

Here are some examples of goals I can help you achieve:

• Speak faster, without having to think too much.

• Communicate better with French people around you (family, friends).

• Discover French literature and arts.

• Review or prepare for a French exam.

• Prepare for your next trip to France...

There is no bad reason to learn a language, so don’t hesitate. If you think your goal might be a little bit unusual, it’s even better : it will make classes even more interesting and enriching.

- What do we do during the first class -

Before we meet, I will ask some information :

• why you are learning French

• how you evaluate your current level

• what are your hobbies and interests

• how you have studied French so far (if you have).

During the first class we will proceed as follows:

1. You will introduce yourself (in French if possible) and I will do the same.

2. You will read a text related to your interests. Then I will ask simple questions about it. The goal is to see how you read, what you can understand and how you pronounce words.

3. We will watch one or two short videos, and I will ask what you’ve understood and what you think about them. This allows me to see whether you feel at ease wen people speak quickly and naturally. It's also a good way to train your ear.

4. I'll ask you to act out situations such as going to the store, asking for directions, talking about a book or a TV show to see how you speak spontaneously.

5. I will show you an example of a short lesson and interactive games.

6. Finally, I will ask you to download a (free) flashcard app on your phone or computer. Then, I’ll show you interesting vocabulary decks for you. For face-to-face classes, I can give you printed flash cards instead

- What happens after the first class ? -

If you think I can help you, we can meet again. Progressively, we’ll find the ideal pace and contents. Each class contains speaking, listening, reading and writing activities, focusing on what is most useful in order to achieve your goals.

Here are some examples of the tools we will use :

• Short grammar lessons: I don't want to overwhelm you with rules. We will discover French grammar step by step, with simple explanations and interesting exercises.

• Flash cards: I will provide flash cards echoing your goals. This way, you will learn words that you can actually use in real life. I will ask you to use the vocabulary you have learned when we talk to each other.

• Mind maps: some people have trouble with traditional learning methods. If you think you’re among them, we can use techniques such as mind maps, which allow to memorize more information with less effort.

• Games: I will provide you with many interactive or printable games (memory, quizzes, crossword puzzles) designed especially for you.

• Short texts: thanks to short, clear and useful texts, you will improve your reading and understanding skills in French without even noticing, simply by reading.

• Short videos: you will train your ear and your pronunciation thanks to short videos. To improve your pronunciation, we will sometime use a technique know as shadowing (repeating what you’ve just heard).
How long does a session last?

I think that, for most people, the ideal length of a class is one hour and thirty minutes (1h30), with one or two classes each week. However, we can discuss different lengths and frequencies if it better suits your needs.

Will I need to study by myself?

It goes without saying that studying by yourself is a good thing and will help. The more you read and listen to the French language, the more you’ll be able to speak and understand it well.

However, I am well aware that we all have busy schedules. Therefore, I will never impose extra work on you. But do feel free to ask me for it : upon request, I can provide additional readings, exercises and videos.
