About Shaun

For almost 15 years, I've been teaching History, Politics, International Relations and English as a Foreign Language online to students from all over the world. I have a comprehensive academic background: including holding a Master's degree in History of International Relations from the London School of Economics (LSE); a Bachelor's in History from the University of East Anglia (UEA); and studying for a doctorate in History at the University of Oxford. I also work as an academic editor, and have huge experience of helping some of the finest academics in the world - many of them professors and lecturers at the University of Cambridge - publish ground-breaking books, chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles across the humanities and social sciences. What I love about tutoring is the chance to work one-to-one with a student and zone in on their particular learning needs. I have a great deal of empathy, which enables me to quickly assess what materials and what method of teaching will work best. I use videos a great deal in helping explain various themes, periods and issues; but my aim is always to ask lots of questions and help my students learn how to think and write critically and with confidence. A-Level, IB and university students will be treated by me as adults, fully capable of forming and expressing their own views. My job is to give them the tools to do so as effectively and analytically as possible, so preparing them to utilise these hugely important, richly valuable skills in the wider working world afterwards. I hugely enjoy my job. Having the chance to make a positive difference in people's lives and helping them fulfil their academic potential is enormously rewarding. I hope I can do the same for you or your child too!

From A-Level upwards, both History and Politics require an increasingly analytical approach from students. That's why the most important skill they can ever develop is critical thinking, enabling them to separate fact from fiction, objectivity from bias, but also to contextualise events from when they were taking place. Understanding the many different sides to a story, rather than forming an instant judgement, is often key. In History, knowledge of ongoing historiographical debates and controversy in areas such as (among many others), Hitler's rise to power or the origins of the Cold War is also paramount. This becomes ever more the case at university: which demands more and more reading around the subject, encourages a sense of intellectual freedom, and rewards the confidence to argue a case effectively and with properly researched evidence. My students succeed because I simultaneously challenge them and build their self-confidence. My background as an editor also gives me great skills as a writing coach: I use Google Docs to work interactively with students in correcting their writing, ask questions and make recommendations around essays and dissertations. One Russian student started A Level Politics with incredibly little knowledge of UK politics, poor levels of English grammar and almost no awareness of how to write essays. She moved from not even Grade E when starting to achieving an excellent, hugely deserved B after two years with me. Her mother thanked me for having taught her patience and giving her the opportunity to delve into, think and analyse all manner of different themes and issues. I also work with undergraduate students at Cambridge, especially around their end-of-degree dissertations. I proofread their drafts, make suggestions and bounce ideas off them. Their marks have improved enormously as a result: often rising more than a full grade, from lower-second class to achieving a first. Depending on your availability, budget and learning style, classes can be 45, 60, 75 or 90 minutes in length. It's entirely up to you. The first class, when we can see whether we are a good fit and if my teaching methodology suits you, is free.
