About Eliot
Writing is a way of seeing, of encountering the world. So much of making memorable texts comes from being a discerning reader. It comes from being open to the mystery of the world. We work together across prose, poetry, drama, and nonfiction to capture your distinct voice. Maybe you have the sense you have a captivating novel inside of you, or you intuitively feel attracted to writing poems—whatever you dream of writing, you are meant to write. I'm here to guide you, to challenge you, and to deepen your gifts. I have taught and worked as an editor and teacher for over four years. My first book was nominated for the National Book Award in 2023, and I am a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where I got my MFA in Fiction. I have taught creative writing at a college level at the University of Iowa, but I enjoy tutoring students one-on-one the most.

In essay writing sessions, we fine tune your voice so that it best meets your assignments. Particularly experienced with personal essays, comp lit and philosophy essays.
In creative writing tutoring sessions, we look at your strengths to build up confidence. We try to relieve ourself of the inner critic so that we can write the things that are memorable and strong. We may do writing prompts on stream of consciousness, POV or pace. I look at both the broad philosophical dimensions of writing and the detailed level of syntax and punctuation. I am warm and rigorous, creating both an openness and structure to writing creatively. My sessions are for anyone middle school grade to adults who want an encouraging and challenging tutor to nourish their writing life.

Eliot is such a smart editor. He gives insightful and practical feedback. He has broad knowledge of writing techniques and can breakdown complicated techniques for the beginner or have nuanced conversations with an expert. Having someone to talk to about your writing is invaluable! I would always recommend Eliot for that process.
Eliot is such an amazing tutor. He listens and understands where I want to take my writing. By listening, as well as instructing, I feel seen and heard as a writer and my writing has improved immensely! I believe I can reach my writing goals because of Eliot's help.
Eliot is a phenomenal creative writing teacher because he blends deep literary knowledge with a genuine passion for helping students find their own voices. He doesn’t just lecture—he creates a space where students feel encouraged to take risks, play with language, and push beyond formulaic writing. His feedback is thoughtful, specific, and constructive; he doesn’t simply mark what’s “wrong,” but instead highlights strengths and offers clear, inspiring suggestions for growth.
What makes Eliot stand out is his ability to meet students where they are. Whether someone is a seasoned writer or just beginning, he adapts his teaching so every student feels challenged but never discouraged. He fosters a collaborative environment, inviting discussion and creativity rather than dictating rules. The result is a class that feels both rigorous and freeing, where students leave not only with stronger technical skills but also with greater confidence in their own creative expression.
Simply put, Eliot teaches with heart, intellect, and an infectious love of storytelling—qualities that make him an outstanding mentor in the world of creative writing.Eliot was indispensable as he helped me shape and edit my volumes of journals into an integrated manuscript. He encouraged my voice and pushed me in ways that were revelatory and nourishing. He was patient and willing to discuss my manuscript holistically as well as line by line, chapter by chapter. He was always thoughtful, insightful and flexible in approach during our weekly sessions. I highly recommend him and plan to work with him again.
