About Edwin
I take a calm and approachable stance in my teaching, though I make it a point to challenge my students with thought-provoking questions. I supplement this with a variety of first-class resources (many of which are not available anywhere else), feedback and homework. With years of tutoring experience, I’m adept at identifying areas where they might struggle and offering practical solutions. I also make a conscious effort to highlight their strengths and provide plenty of encouragement for their achievements. My students respond well to me because I treat them with the respect and consideration I would extend to any adult. Top schools look for pupils who are curious and engaging, and I work to show them how those qualities are interconnected. I enjoy learning about their reading interests and hobbies, as these often play a key role in interview preparation. Discussing what excites them or the books they’ve recently enjoyed helps them find topics where they feel confident and knowledgeable, providing a solid foundation for meaningful and self-assured conversations. I won't go on about my own credentials but for anyone who is interested, the below is a professional biography that was used for some seminars I presented at: Edwin Hawkes - Education Specialist: Few individuals in private education possess the depth of experience and insight as Edwin. Edwin – Expert Tutor for PPE, TSA and Oxbridge Admissions With over 15 years’ experience preparing students for entry to the most competitive UK universities, I specialise in guiding ambitious applicants through the TSA and Oxbridge admissions process. My students have won places at Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL, Imperial and other world-leading universities, as well as selective sixth forms such as Westminster and The Perse, where the Thinking Skills paper is part of the admissions process. TSA and PPE Specialism I have designed a structured 6-part TSA preparation course developed over more than a decade of teaching. The programme runs across approximately 10 hours of tuition and covers both Part 1 (Critical Thinking & Problem Solving) and Part 2 (Essay Writing). Over the past 10 years, I have worked with successful candidates across all the subjects that have historically required the TSA, including: Oxford: PPE, Experimental Psychology, Human Sciences, Geography, PPL, Psychology & Linguistics Cambridge: Land Economy UCL: European Social & Political Studies (ESPS) I am also happy to provide focused support on just one part of the test – for example, helping prospective Economics or History students sharpen their essay-writing or problem-solving. My students typically see their Part 1 scores rise by 5–10 points, with many achieving scores over 40, practically guaranteeing an interview. Crucially, in Part 2 I show students how to select and craft a distinctive, effective essay that makes their application stand out. Wider Admissions Expertise Alongside TSA preparation, I also provide: Oxbridge PPE interview coaching, with realistic mock interviews and detailed feedback Personal statement guidance, helping you build a compelling and authentic application Support with written work, critical reading, and subject exploration to demonstrate academic curiosity Teaching Style I believe in tailored, practical coaching. Every student is different, so I combine structured methods with flexibility, adapting to each student’s strengths and areas for improvement.

Edwin seems to know everything about the TSA exam and his explanations and examples are so much more helpful than the basic ones given on the official Oxford site. His 6 Powerpoints breaking each of the question type down was so useful. After the classes I went from an average of about 25 to 35 every time.
Edwin helped my son prepare for his Yr6 pre-tests, focusing on comprehension of all the types of questions, and also increasing vocabulary and grammar. My son, who speaks English as a second language, often found these areas overwhelming, but Edwin patiently broke everything down into clear, simple steps. His thoughtful teaching style gave my son the tools and confidence to succeed.
After each session, Edwin provided detailed feedback that helped my son understand his strengths and areas for improvement. He assigned homework that built on what they had covered in lessons, which helped him develop his skills consistently over time. The resources Edwin shared, including annotated examples, were invaluable.
By the time of his exams, my son was approaching tasks with confidence. He secured a place at Eton College, and I’m certain Edwin’s expert guidance made it possible. We’re incredibly grateful for his support throughout this challenging process.
We just had one class with Edwin to discuss our options and it was very useful in making our choice about the right school. The detailed summary at the end was very helpful.
We had been using Atom Learning for my son’s 11+ preparation, but Edwin’s experience with the platform completely transformed how we used it. He showed us how to identify areas for improvement and created a focused study plan that worked brilliantly for my son.
Edwin also brought in his own resources to ensure my son was prepared for all aspects of the exams. The combination of Atom Learning and Edwin’s teaching worked perfectly, and my son went into the exams confident and ready. We were thrilled when he received offers from all three schools he applied to!
Preparing for Westminster at 16+ was daunting, but Edwin made it so much easier to navigate. He helped me organise my studies and refine my essay-writing skills, ensuring I felt ready for the entrance exams. Edwin also worked with my other tutors to ensure every part of my preparation was on track. One of the most helpful parts of the process was the interview practice. Edwin showed me how to present my ideas clearly and gave me valuable feedback on how to approach tricky questions. We practised several times, and I felt much more confident as a result. On the day of the interviews (five in one day!), I felt calm and ready. I was thrilled to receive an offer from Westminster, and I know I couldn’t have achieved it without Edwin’s guidance and support.
I got 9s in both English Language and Literature GCSEs, thanks to Edwin’s help! He showed me how to structure essays properly and made text analysis much easier to understand. His detailed feedback was incredibly helpful, and I felt well-prepared going into the exams.
My daughter speaks English as a second language. Preparing for 11+ was a big challenge for her. Edwin was incredibly patient, working with her on vocabulary, comprehension, and creative writing. He taught her strategies that made tasks feel less difficult. And his encouragement helped her believe in herself.
She got a scholarship to her chosen school! Which we didn’t think possible when we started. Thank you again Mr Edwin!Edwin supported my daughter with her 13+ preparation, and his calm, structured approach was exactly what we needed. She had been struggling with comprehension and essay writing, but Edwin showed her how to break down tasks and approach them step by step. There are also a whole lot of exams involved at 13+, for sciences and humanities as well, but Edwin was able to explain all of these carefully.
His feedback was always thorough, explaining what she was doing well and what needed improvement. The homework assignments he gave reinforced what they worked on in lessons, helping her to build her skills gradually. Thanks to Edwin’s guidance, she gained a place at Wycombe Abbey, and we couldn’t be more pleased.
Edwin’s support helped my son achieve a 7 in his English IB Higher Level exam. He went way beyond the textbooks and showed my son how to structure essays and analyse texts in a way that was easy to follow. Edwin’s calm, clear teaching style made a huge difference to my son’s confidence and performance.
