About Sarp

I am an architecture student at Politecnico di Milano. I studied two years of engineering at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, but I stopped my studies in order to study architecture in Milan. I intend to share my knowledge to help people with their own goals.

I try to make the lessons as fun and interesting as possible. I am very interested in the topic I taught and I think it makes the lessons interesting and easy to follow, which is not so common for history lessons.

  • Where does your passion for the subject you teach and for private lessons come from?

I was always interested in history ever since I was a little kid, and later-on that interest sort of spread to art and architecture as well. I feel like once you're really into history, it is impossible to keep away from other topics such as art, architecture, and economics, because you realize that they are all intertwined!
  • What are the topics you prefer to discuss with students? And which ones do you like least?

My favorite topic is history, which includes the history of art & architecture and general culture. I like it the most since it contains the topics that I'm interested in. I would say logic is the one that I enjoy the least, because sometimes the questions might get a bit annoying.
  • What are your role models or points of reference? Was there a particular teacher or work that left a mark and inspiration on you?

I have to say that my history teacher in primary school is probably the that I got influenced the most. I remember really enjoying the lesson due to his positive attitude. My dad is usually very impatient when he explains something, and I think that influenced me to become more patient and understand towards my students.
  • What do you think are the qualities needed to be a good teacher or expert in your domain?

First, for the Italian Architecture Exam (Test), you should be very knowledgeable in various subjects, such as history, art, architecture, general culture in addition to math, physics, and logic, the last three requiring less in-depth knowledge than the first four topics. You should know all the small trivia etc. to really make sure students know all there that is to know. Furthermore, you have to be very patient and understanding of the various backgrounds of students in order to cater specific approaches to different kinds of students.
  • Tell us a funny or special anecdote related to your education or a lesson experience!

When I was in my first year of architecture, I was really bored in the class, so I drew a classical temple on a piece of paper, cut it out, and made a cylinder out of it by attaching the ends to each other. Then I built a roof for it and placed my phone with the flash open to make it glow. The prof noticed it and turned off the lights so everyone could see it!
  • Reassure us, have you too, like all of us, encountered any difficulties at school...?

Of course, I had a very difficult time in biology during high school and almost failed it in my second year! In my first two years of university, I studied engineering, which I realized later was not really what I wanted to do in life. It was a difficult time…
  • What are your passions, besides the subject you teach?

My passions, thankfully, align very closely with the subjects I teach. I'm very interested in history, architecture, and economics. I feel like you can't be interested in only one of these while ignoring the others, since they're closely intertwined. I like reading all eras of history, although I would say I'm more European centric and read between the years 250 BC - 1991. As an architecture student, I am interested in façade studies and working on renderings. My aim is to develop timeless buildings, so I would say I spend quite a long time thinking how to achieve that. Regarding economics, I read mostly about income inequality, its causes, and solutions.
  • What makes you a great Superprof (besides the fact that you responded to this interview :-P)?

I think it really is a matter of passion in the subjects that you teach and wanting the best for your students. Since I already went through the same struggles, I think there is nothing more natural than to help people who're going through the same thing right now.
