About Rory
With 7 years of chess tutoring behind me, I’ve worked with hundreds of learners ranging from young students to analytical adults. My passion for the game stems from my competitive background, reinforced through formal chess study and tournament experiences across local circuits. My focus has always been to turn chess into an engaging, rewarding journey for every learner. I create an environment where mistakes are celebrated as learning opportunities. My students benefit from strategic step-by-step coaching that doesn’t just focus on memorising openings but builds intuitive play. I incorporate modern tools like chess engines and apps while still emphasising traditional board practices and mental visualisation skills. Many of my students have gone on to win school-level and regional competitions. More importantly, they’ve developed problem-solving abilities and patience that extend beyond the game. I’m passionate about developing these life-enhancing skills in every student. Whether you’ve never touched a board or already play competitively, I tailor each session to your growth.

In Leeds, the chess curriculum is built around a structured, tactical foundation designed to nurture both beginners and advancing players. We begin with a deep dive into essential principles such as the value of pieces, control of the centre, and how to develop pieces effectively. Through interactive exercises and puzzles, you'll learn not only how to play chess, but how to think like a chess player. As your understanding grows, the focus turns to more complex tactics—pinning, skewering, discovered attacks—and the ability to identify strategic advantages before your opponent does. You'll study classic games from historical masters, learning to decode their decisions move by move. Endgame theory will also be emphasised, where students discover how just a few pieces can determine the final outcome of a match. The goal is not just to improve your rating but to sharpen your decision-making, memory, and patience. Each lesson includes review time, puzzle-solving, and mock games with instructor commentary. Whether you aim to play casually, coach others, or compete in tournaments, these sessions will provide a lasting intellectual advantage.
