About Robert

My name is Mr. Rob Kooy, and I have been a secondary school teacher for 34 years, in both the private and public systems of Ontario and BC. I currently teach Indigenous Studies, History, Civics, and Careers at Collingwood Collegiate Institute. I have taught many other courses as well, ranging from the Social Sciences to English to Student Success, Learning Strategies, and Credit Recovery. I also help coordinate and manage the tech hardware at my school, and help both students and colleagues overcome online software and hardware challenges. I hold Specialist qualifications in Teaching E-Learning, History, and Indigenous Studies. I love teaching, and get energized by empowering young people to discover their strengths, overcome their obstacles, and thrive as lifelong learners. I believe learning is a dynamic partnership between student, teacher, and home.

Skill Areas: *Math, Science, French, typically up to Grade 10 *English: paragraph, essay writing, reports *History, Civics, Indigenous Studies *Career planning *D2L, Google Classroom skills, navigation *Teaching how to use helpful, powerful apps to improve learning *Computer tips, tricks *Making assignments and presentations that dazzle *Smartphone self-regulation skills My tutoring business is built on 5 fundamentals: #1 Every student can succeed and reach their full potential, regardless of obstacles This cannot happen until the learning obstacles are first properly identified and understood. The next step is to break down each obstacle into manageable parts, and then turn these into learning opportunities. The past few years have introduced some new and extreme learning challenges to many students, which may contribute to you seeking help for your child at this time. #2 Often students do not reach full potential because of learned failure Negative thought patterns tend to derail us. In many cases, slowing down and dismantling these thought patterns can prepare the student to experience a new direction, enabling them to be open to new learning skills. It’s all about changing direction and leaving false narratives behind. The bottom line is that students all learn differently, many have learning exceptionalities, and some need to be given new, “outside the box” opportunities to be successful. #3 Successful learning requires scaffolding While subjects and courses vary, there are several universal components of learning. Scaffolding in particular refers to breaking down a process into manageable steps, and building knowledge out and up. We leverage what we know to tackle what we don’t know. Successful learners do not rush; they plan, are purposeful and methodical, and get results. Without scaffolding, it is very difficult to learn and retain skills and knowledge. #4 Tutoring excellence requires online teaching expertise As an early practitioner of online teaching/learning, I have provided online teaching, learning and D2L training for staff for the past 8 years, and have also managed and expanded Chromebook access to maximize online learning at my school. I believe that online learning provides excellent learning opportunities, but also potential for difficulty and disengagement. My extensive online teaching experience (D2L, Google Classroom, multiple apps) enables me to help identify both subject and platform obstacles to success. It’s no longer enough to be a Math, Science, or English tutor without also possessing online platform skills. You should expect these dual troubleshooting skills as you consider the ideal tutor for your child. #5 Tutoring excellence requires face-to-face teaching expertise Today, students find themselves facing a variety of teaching styles and platforms, more so than when we as parents were in school. Then the school experience was typically limited to a classroom, desks, textbooks, pen, paper, lecture and copying notes (hopefully with some variation!) Face-to-face learning today has some of these components, but technology is embedded in the student experience. This has created plenty of challenges and opportunities, and coincides with the prevalence of smartphone use and misuse. In my school classroom, I strive to build an interactive learning space that starts with device self-regulation, to allow for a vibrant learning community that prioritizes communication and skill building. I also create class profiles so I get to know students' learning styles and IEP exceptionalities quickly. In addition, I contact home often and early. This diverse classroom expertise is crucial as you choose the right tutor for your child.ervices
