About Merlyn
I teach the flute with the understanding that adults have different learning rhythms, life responsibilities, and emotional goals than younger students. Most of the people I work with are in their 50s, 60s, or 70s—and what they all share is a desire to learn something meaningful, in a way that honors their pace and style. My instruction focuses first on cultivating ease: breath flow, comfort with the instrument, and tonal clarity. From there, we build step-by-step toward playing short melodies, reading music, and exploring phrasing. I incorporate breathing exercises, focused listening, and tools that help demystify rhythm and notation. We use materials that are visually accessible and musically relevant to your interests—whether that’s film music, meditative pieces, or folk tunes. I also offer support between lessons, so you never feel stuck. For me, teaching adults isn’t about cramming information; it’s about sparking joy and helping each person find their unique musical voice.

Learning the flute as an adult should be a source of joy, curiosity, and confidence—not intimidation. I’ve designed my instruction style specifically for adult learners, particularly those over 50, who want to engage with music in a relaxed yet focused way. With a background in classical performance and a passion for educational innovation, I combine the best of both worlds: clear technical instruction and modern, student-centered strategies. In our lessons, we use breathing cues, visualization, and real-time practice feedback to refine your tone and phrasing. I also include multi-sensory methods like rhythm clapping, melodic dictation, and call-and-response games to reinforce musical fluency. You’ll learn to trust your ear, read music at your own pace, and explore improvisation in a safe and encouraging space. Whether your goal is relaxation, community, or personal achievement, I’ll help you build a path that feels right for you.
