About Rebecca
I am a widely published author — my memoir was published with a major press in 2017 and I have hundreds of bylines in the national and international media, including the household-name legacy media. I currently teach academic writing part-time at the University of Oregon and have taught creative nonfiction (including memoir and essay) for the Stanford Continuing Studies program. My teaching evaluations are superb and I am able to provide glowing references on request. Thank you!

My writing teaching method depends on the genre you are working to improve. All of my lessons, however, begin with a short free-writing "warmup" that incorporates past concepts and lessons and gives the student a chance to review and strengthen their work. After the warmup, we do a quick spot-check and revision, sometimes going toe-to-toe with a large language model (LLM) or "chatbot" to see if a human can revise a sentence better than a robot can! (Hint: yes!). Then I introduce a new concept, either following the curriculum the student is working on already or following my own if my instruction is standalone -- this will usually incorporate some audiovisual content. After that we have another chance to free-write using our new concept, a quick revision of that, and then an informal conversation where I can answer any questions that the student hasn't thought to ask yet. If the student doesn't already have a homework assignment from an existing class, I will also offer an optional at-home practice session that should take about 15-60 minutes depending on student needs and goals.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my years of experience in writing and publishing, my stellar record both in the classroom and on the page, and my approachable, friendly, engaging and dynamic teaching style that makes students look forward to my lessons all day (or week).
I look forward to offering these services to you if you are middle-school aged or above and want to improve writing of any kind, and this especially includes adults in retirement who are looking to preserve their memoirs for their descendants (or publish them!).
