Language apps

Language apps are a great option to start at your own pace to learn Dutch, they are often free or have a free-trial period and features. They can be very practical because you can learn on the go on your phone, you can also decide how much time you are able to dedicate to learning the language in the first weeks or months.

Here are just a few popular options for language apps:

  • Duolingo: it's completely free unless you want the Plus version, which removes ads and allows you to download lessons to study offline. The paid versions cost 13.99/month or €87.99 if you take an annual subscription.
This learning language app is very popular because language learning feels like a game. You have to log in every day to maintain streaks, gain experience points and level up. The lessons are divided into sections, reading, writing, listening and speaking.
  • Memrise: is different from Duolingo because it has a major focus on vocabulary.  It has a free trial and then a subscription of 1 month for €8,99.
  • Rosetta Stone: is an application and software that remains the best premium software for building a foundation in a foreign language. It's excellent for beginners, and it has a ton of additional content for more advanced learners, too. You can choose a three-month subscription, one year or lifelong subscription! Rosetta is a bit more pricey than the other online options, but they have a great reputation and overall reviews.

There are many language applications to learn a language, such as Babbel, MosaLingua and more, we encourage you to look closer at each one of them to find what is more suitable for you.

Group lessons at a university or language school

If you need a more sustained way of learning, finding classes at a college or language school nearby can be a great option. Nowadays, institutions are more flexible and offer both on-site and online classes. A great aspect of group lessons at a language course is the very structured curriculum, oftentimes you are able to do a language exam during your course to acquire a language certificate for your level.

On location

Most Universities or Colleges will have a Foreign Language department that offers group classes throughout the year.

For example, Trinity College Dublin offers on-site classes, once per week on Tuesdays for 11 weeks, the price is 217 euros. Sometimes you will also have to cover an enrolment fee and the book materials to take the courses.

Group classes are best suited for persons that also like to learn from other people than their teacher, finding a community that shares your interests can help you stay motivated during your learning process.

Online

Language schools now offer online options for everyone that prefers to study from their office or the comfort of their home. Prices vary from school to school, as well as the frequency and length of the classes. We found that prices vary between €320 for 10 hours to €1350  for 60 hours. They are virtual classes via zoom or Skype, and sometimes the learning material is included in the price.

These options have a certain curriculum and pace to follow, if you fall behind you might feel the need to drop the class or be deeply discouraged. While, if you are able to learn at a faster pace, some classes might be boring or just too repetitive.

Both options can adapt to different budgets, but the times might be less flexible than a private teacher or if you decide to learn on your own with the help of an app or software.

Immersive language learning

This learning experience is the most expensive one yet, but might be a fit for you, depending on why you have decided to learn Dutch.

Immersive language learning means travelling to a country that speaks Dutch and covering all the expenses related to transportation, travel, and living expenses for the whole duration of your stay. In addition, the price of housing will also vary from country or city. Another additional cost is the classes or tutoring you will decide to do take during your stay.

This option can be very expensive in the long term, but can also be a fun experience for short periods of time, for example for a summer or a couple of weeks to study intensely. The immersive language learning will force you to practice your language skills in real-life situations, but also learn from the cultural aspects of the country where Dutch is spoken.

This makes it one of the best ways to learn a language, it is a powerful way to improve at a faster pace your proficiency, listening and speaking abilities and further deepen your vocabulary. If you have the time and money, you should consider it!

Private tutoring

If you rather have a personalized learning experience, where the private instructor can provide you with more guidance than an app or a group and online class. There are many benefits to having a tutor when learning Dutch.

First, you can find and choose your own tutor, the one that brings you the knowledge and experience that you need to help you understand Dutch. A private tutor will also keep you accountable in your learning, bringing you a tailored learning structure and rhythm, as well as, giving you all the feedback necessary along your learning journey.

Depending on your goals, a private tutor will be able to adjust to them, whether you are a beginner or if you are preparing for an entrance exam.

Prices vary for private tutors, they are based on the lesson duration, location, the teacher's experience, qualifications and if you decide to take lessons packages. In Superprof Ireland, the average for an hour class of Dutch is €29.
