We've all had moments of pretending to be Céline Dion on Meatloaf in the shower with a hairbrush shampoo bottle belting out lyrics as if you're performing in front of a full crowd at Croke Park! But, some people genuinely want to pursue the singing route, and learn how to do it properly, whether it is to impress everyone on a karaoke night out, join a local choir or become the next Irish global singing sensation like Dolores O'Riordan or Niall Horan, whatever the reason you want to learn to sing, we're here to help.

"When I got pregnant, I started singing again. It was my saving grace. I literally mean having this amazing human life, and our relationship in the sense of mother and child, redeemed my soul."

- Dolores O'Riordan

Learning to Sing With Karaoke App

There are so many reasons to use karaoke apps, the main reason is they are just so much fun! Whether it's on your own or in a group karaoke apps are becoming more and more popular to download and use as a way of singing whether it's to practice your vocal expertise or just have some fun at a party. However, have you ever considered practising your singing with karaoke videos or using apps to practise singing on your own to improve your singing skills? If so these apps are a great tool, let's check it out.

"Singing provides a true sense of lightheartedness. If I sing when I am alone, I feel wonderful. It's freedom."

- Andrea Bocelli

Why You Should Use Karaoke Apps

There are a few reasons why when you're starting to learn how to sing using a karaoke app might be a better idea than signing up for lessons for example:

  • It's fun! - You can take out your phone and sing. Any time feel like having a bop, just open the app and sing!
  • It's Commitment free! - If you're not sure how passionate or dedicated you are to the whole singing thing yet then maybe a karaoke app is the best place to start, it allows you to get a feel for it without committing to regular lessons.
  • It's less expensive! - A karaoke app costs a lot less than singing lessons from a voice teacher. If you’re on a budget, a karaoke app might just be the best option for learning how to sing without breaking the bank. Some apps are even available for free and others can cost way less than a tutor or a singing instructor visiting your home once a week.

Karaoke improves your singing ability by helping you to practice and gives you the opportunity to improve your confidence which will help you become a better performer.

Do YouTube Singing Lessons Actually Work?

Hmmm, I guess the basic question here is 'can you learn to sing using YouTube lessons?' and the basic answer would be
Yes, if you are only learning to sing with decent technique at a very basic level, you can learn to sing by watching YouTube videos. You can pretty much learn a basic level of anything on YouTube, it's a great platform for beginners.

With that being said, Youtube is full of some great tutors and vocal coaches who upload really helpful content and even have some life lessons for beginners.

Below is a list of the 3 best singing tutors on YouTube right now:

  1. 30 Day Singer - On YouTube 30 Day Singer offers beginner singing lessons and tutorials on warm-up exercises, breathing techniques and correct posture. However, they also offer full courses on their website for a fee.
  2. Superior Singing Method - Once again, Superior Singing Method for beginner singing lessons and tutorials on warm-up exercises, breathing techniques and correct posture on YouTube while also offering full courses on its own website.
  3. Howcast - Howcast is an American YouTube channel that provides 'How To' videos on almost any topic you can think of, so naturally they have a playlist full of videos teaching you how to sing.

As I have already noted YouTube is fine for people who are starting out, it will teach you the very basic levels of what you need to know about singing, but it will not give you the same instruction or feedback as a one-to-one trainer or coach will.

What You Need to Know When it Comes to Singing

"First of all, I love singing. I mean, I get out of bed and I sing. I can't help it."

- Tom Jones

Everyone can sing. Everyone is born with a different voice and vocal range, they just need to learn how to engage with their voice and use it in a way that suits them. If you want to improve your singing voice takes a mix of a few things: balance, coordination, and the right exercises, practice really does make perfect but it also does take time.

To improve your singing voice, first of all, need to understand what makes a good singer, below are the five essential areas you must focus on:

  1. Controlling Pitch: Yes, this one is kind of obvious but staying in key is one of the most important aspects of being a singer. Once you start to gain control over your voice, you can start mastering all those beautiful notes.
  2. Strong Support: This is all about keeping those vocal chords strong. A great singer and needs a great set of vocal chords. So, look at them, do your breathing exercises and your warmup exercises take care of your instrument.
  3. Volume and Style:  Be aware of the music and the song you are singing. You're not just going to burst into a song if it's a soft ballad or start off really soft and subtle if you're singing a rock song find the balance, find the melody, be aware of the volume and style.
  4. Self-Awareness: A good singer doesn’t just belt out a song regardless of whether they are in tune or not. When you are aware of your singing voice, you will be more attuned to knowing if you are able to hit the right notes, produce the right pitch, and just have a better idea as to how you sound. With a little training, you will also be able to tell if you are damaging your throat muscles. In all cases, if your throat hurts, stop what you are doing.
  5. Using Your Voice: Learn your vocal range and stay within it.  When singing one of the most important things is to, listen to yourself. Use your ears along with your voice when you sing, and you will have a clearer picture of your strengths and weakness.

Learning how to improve your singing voice is not a quick process, it takes time, practice, patience and maybe some lessons too.
